Canadian Laws on Assisted Flippers to Change

That is absolutely ridiculous. I was planning on moving to Canada within a few years too, but not if they keep changing laws for the worst!

Sigh...
The laws have not changed.
The laws are not changing.
The folks at the Border are making their own stupid regulations within their little sphere of influence, and their tribunal is upholding their made up rules.

It has nothing, nothing, to do with the rest of the country.

Just don't decide to go live in the Border Services building, and you'll be fine.

Also I think this is really only being applied to shipments to consumers ... i.e. there is heightened scrutiny of Joe Blow buying from an online US retailer either because of concern some people may be importing prohibited knives or because Canadian retailers are leaning on the government to protect their interests.

I declared a knife at the border a week ago and not one question was asked.

There is hugely increased Canadian border scrutiny on knife packages, and my SOG Fatcat got opened at customs, as did nearly every other package I got since August, including knives I sent in for sharpening, which got stuck for 3 weeks...

And the border charges have become insane: My SOG Fatcat, at US $280, got an CAN $83 charge... From Europe it seems a little lower, but not much...

I'm going to try to keep this from getting into politics but;
Unless you want the government controlling your interests that include firearms, knives, paying excessive taxes why would you want to move here? You have far more choices south of the boarder than many here including myself are envious, such as the right to carry handguns in bear country. During the conservatives rein of power I ordered many folders where the packages were never opened. Now we have a liberal government it appears they are very interested in Canadians who buy knives from outside of the country. If they remain in power long enough its quite conceivable that guncontrol and knives will come up for discussion once again, imposing further mandates.

Yeah, but here you can have a 12 gauge shotgun with an 8.5 inch barrel. :)
Carry that for bears.

Those short barrels are nice, great for home security and to motivate unwanted guests to leave, but they are quite bulky and heavy when compared to a good hand cannon on the belt when miles out in the bush.

I have had a few things stopped at the border they confiscated my Moon mrk 6 but I find it has a lot to do with declared value it's not 100% but in my experience items under $50 on paper do much better getting through. It is complete crap how they are interpreting the law as I told the agent myself. They are claiming a president setting ruling where a 0200 was deemed an auto here is the link to that ruling http://www.citt.gc.ca/en/node/7447

Hi Folks,
New member here. just a heads-up that if you travel to Montreal and you carry, your taking your chances. This is a nannie-state/banana republic: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montr...-220-for-carrying-traditional-knife-1.3835762
if you open carry the cops freak out worse then little old ladies (no offense to little old ladies). and if you keep it concealed, don't take it out in public for any reason or you'll get busted for carrying a concealed weapon. And there is no minimum length that's allowed in the city limits.
personally, I carry one but it's mine, I made it so I carry it and take my chances....f'em.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this city/province.

Yes CBSA put out a revised memorandum that makes flippers and assisted opening knives with flipper tabs prohibited weapons.

“Paragraph (a)” weapons

18. Weapons that fall under paragraph (a) include the following:

(a) Automatic knife – An automatic knife is one that houses a blade that will open automatically by applying hand pressure to a button, spring, lever, or other device, in or attached to the handle of the knife, including knives that have a button, spring, lever, or other device, located in the spine of the handle and attached to the inner part of the blade.
Note: Knives that have a ‘thumb stud’ attached to the blade of the knife, that is independent of the handle (not protruding from the handle in the closed or folded position), and that open automatically by applying pressure to the thumb stud, do not generally meet the above definition of a prohibited weapon, and as such do not generally fall under TI 9898.00.00. However, if such a knife is found to also open by gravity or by the application of centrifugal force alone, it may still be considered to be prohibited. The misuse of knives may nonetheless be punishable under other laws.

Probably read this a touch late considering I have the Quartermaster QSE-11 Mr. Belvedere 'Austin Weisse Signature Edition' flipper on the way (shipped last month of August) from their headquarters in Texas and the QSE-5Z Mr. Roper "Eviction" flipper (ordered last week) from BladeHQ also on the way... Sparking some worry about the Para2 I ordered several weeks ago too as I read on the Spyderco forum the CBSA is holding them as prohibited lately as well. This might turn out to be a very hard and expensive lesson learned... (fingers crossed i guess) I might have to resort to AA meetings for my knife addiction cause the struggle just got real :(

So basically millions of knives that are already in our hands are illegal, this is ridiculous. I know a bunch of us recently got some ZT 0350BW that amazon had on sale for $50 and they came across the border and didn't have an issue. Realistically what can be done about this? I really wanted to order a knife from Finland but now im scared that it will just get taken.

So I just came back to this thread after I heard some rumblings.

Anyone have any updates?

This is a big pile of poo if you ask me.

Making the world a safer place one folder at a time.

No. Nothing has been made illegal.

Nothings been made illegal, just prohibited?

So we can expect most one hand knives fr spyderco benchmade and ZT etc to be a "no go" at the border?

They aren't illegal or prohibited in Canada.
The laws in Canada are still the same.

The folks at the Border have their own ideas though, and good luck convincing them otherwise.

I think the next time I buy a new knife I'm going to ship it to my parcel pick up. I already have the law printed out from the last time I picked up a knife from the US. Even though it was printed out in black and white there was still a big curfuffel and they just barely let me take my knife.

What stabman said.

It's important to understand that CBSA tribunals, which establish precedents for CBSA confiscations, do not follow criminal law standards and are not presided by judges, or even lawyers in all cases. CBSA tribunals decide a civil question, not a criminal one.

These decisions do not affect criminal law in Canada.

I have routinely brought knives across the border in person, and no one has ever asked to look at them. Also, Canadian retailers don't seem to behaving a problem. This seems to be chiefly a problem with online purchases by individuals -- seems CBSA has flagged these as a concern.
