Having noticed a number of newer Canadian members posting here, I thought I'd offer this Public Service Announcement.

Please read this page!!

Bah...

If I work in my good old Buck knife so that I can swing it open with one hand, is it now a prohibited weapon? If I can't swing it open, but the cop can, will I go to jail?

Switch blades are illegal here, however I can go into ANY decent knife store and buy a spring assisted one hand opener.

I have way to much to say on this topic. In many ways the US is much more open minded to citizens with knives and/or firearms. We have far fewer personal rights when it comes to knives and guns in Canada.

I love how it says police and civil servants are exempt from these laws. I should get a job as a court clerk or something and carry 2 balis with me at work

I am proud to be Canadian, and love my Balisong. I just can't take it down to the beach and play with it. Guess I won't be getting much of a tan this year
wink.gif

Why is it that most of the things in life we enjoy are illegal?

Anyways... Hi to all you other Canadian balisong owners. We can't have guns, but we can hold off the American invasion with knives'a'spinning

Just kidding, I love Americans.

Peace,
Ian

if it werent illegal it woudlnt be fun

pardon me by saying so but the punk in me says it's half the thrill..

It is just crap!We here in Canada are way overregulated. I have no problems with our gun laws.I have a license to buy shotguns and rifles and I am getting my license to buy handguns. But being able to buy one kind of folding knife and not another is absurd. I own many knives and swords that could be very dangerous.A hammer is very dangerous in the wrong hands. Some states in the US are too leninet(come on admit it) while we are far too strict. Acutally if someone wanted to really push for it, I would bet that the laws concerning balisong knives would be ruled unenforceable.Anybody with common sense can see that these are no more dangerous than other folding knives which anyone can easily buy north of the border.Hey I have an idea, lets give some 18 year old kid a permanent police record because he owns a knife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also, it is not that we are all new, I am, but I bet many others are afraid of getting caught.Owning restricted weapons is not taken likely here.

anyone who dies with more than 1.50 in their pocket is a jerk

Strictly speaking, yes. Most cops I know are pretty reasonable, and will recommend that any "worked in" knife like that be tightened or retired.

So do I, so do I.

That has been tried in Quebec, actually. Not too too long ago, their highest court ruled that balisongs did not fall under the description of "gravity knife" as described in the current legislation. That lasted all of about a week - a federal court overturned that decision.

Also, proving a law to be silly, no matter how you do it, is not going convince those responsible for it. Even if statistics were gathered, just for the purposes of exempting this one style from the "gravity knife umbrella," it wouldn't work. Stats only work to make new law, not change or eliminate old ones.

New train of thought ...

Carrying any knife, any length, any design (legal or not), for the purposes of self-defense, is naughty. Another one you don't want to get me started on. (And you all thought I could only be verbose on religion!

I have been a Canadian balisong fan since 1987 and I would like to thank willOthewisp for the information that he provided. It is important for the young guys and any potential tourists to realize that a balisong is just as illegal as a machine-gun as far as our commie liberal government is concerned. As long as you keep your knives hidden and your mouth shut you won't have any problems.

Hey Nash, I'm just a sign-post, not the author.

Thanks anyway though!

Snipey ... how true it is.

Jeez, Canada sounds almost as bad as the UK!

I bet maple syrup is a lot cheaper over there though...

It just makes me so damn mad that the balisong is seemingly considered so incredibly dangerous that it shouldn't be owned by the general public. Theres simply no sense in that, it's just plain dumb.

I think I'll quickly end this post now, before I start to rant.

Jay,

I just have to say that I love your signature. That's exactly my stand in life.

As for knife and firearm laws in general, :barf: They're all based on manipulation of emotions and a need to control, and have nothing to do with public interest.

Hey, if you support Gun Control, don't cry when they ban the knives. We've been over this time and time again. Opinions you are entitled to, the simple fact of the matter is, the people banning guns are banning knives.
