I kind of asked this question embedded in another thread, but here goes. Is Canal Street Cutlery in any way related to Queen? If not, how does their D2 stack up to Queen's, if anyone knows or has an opinion/opportunity to have both?

I ask because I know many times it's the companies heat treat that makes the difference, not just the blade steel used.

Thank you in advance.

Ok, I spoke to Wally Gardnier "the head man" :thumbup:at CSC just last week and as I understand it YES, Queen did supply some parts to CSC, now I'm not sure if they still are or not but here is what I would suggest, call them 845-647-5900. Wally was more than willing to chat and is a GREAT guy ;)!!!

My understanding is that Canal Street bought some of their tooling from Queen, but that they are separate companies under separate management.

So, CSC knives are not farmed out to Queen then, would be my guess. My main question, really, was if there's anyone that's had/has a Queen & CSC in D2 & how did they compare?

Or better yet, has anyone had a problem with Canal Street Cutlery's D2, OTHER than it maybe not being too sharp out of the box?

Thank you.

I have a Canal Street fixed blade drop point hunter in D2 that's one of my favorite knives.
Bought it about three years ago.
Amber stag handle scales, 3.5" blade, and a full flat grind. Satin finish.

It was very, very sharp out of the box and remains so after much use.

My only experience with Queen's D2 is in slipjoints, which I put to lighter use than fixed blades.

I have about a dozen or so Queen slippies in D2, and it's proven to be very good steel.
It certainly seems tough enough and holds a good edge like all D2.
But I've managed to get only one of them as sharp as the Canal Street is.

Queen's D2 is heat treated by Peters' Heat Treating of Meadville, PA.
I don't know who heat treats the Canal Street D2.

I concur with rifon. The Canal St. steel comes very sharp indeed, whereas Queen seems to have a less 'concentrated' attitude to sharpening....But overall on the knives I put Queen ahead.

I agree; I like Queen's slippies over Canal Street's slippies.
Especially with Queen's use of D2 for their blades rather than Canal Street's use of 420HC.

But...I've recently picked up a couple of Canal Street knives that use Latrobes's 14-4 Cr-Mo blade steel, and they are very impressive.
(A muskrat and "Half Moon Trapper".)

If Canal Street continues in this direction, picking between A Queen slipjoint and a Canal Street slipjoint will get much tougher.

Here is my take...They began with parts from Queen, but they have since developed their own patterns and discontinued buying parts from Queen.

Their stuff is top notch.

I really like the work they are doing. We had two forum knives made by Canal Street one was A2 and other D2. They are both great cutters.

Hmm, didn't know about the A2 Forum knife, that sounds nice. I have the D2 Forum knife & I guess I need to use it.

Thank you all for the comments.
