Canal Street Gunstock

LOL, glad you were distracted. It's a shame so many knives and so little money we can't get them all. I've done that, been either paying more attention to something else or forgetting about something I was tracking only to realize too late.

I was really quite surprised it went for what it did. I was watching the last bit (snuck on at work) of the auction and was expecting to get sniped in the last few seconds. I was a little stunned I wasn't, and rather delighted. Natrually, I had to go look at my watch/bids list and see what I may have to drop out off and see what it I really wanted to focus on in the coming days.

Enjoy the strider.

i missed out on a sweet custom damascus framelock yesterday for the price of the strider-that was a real pisser

Heheh, sounds familiar. Or at the last moment you see something you really like with moments to go. You try to do a quick scan of the listing for red flags, check the shipping costs, and the seller's feedback rating, only to miss posting your bid by seconds and you see that item go for a painfully low price.

LOL, we could do a thread of ebay frustration stories and I'm sure everyone here would have plenty.

My sympathies to you on the framelock.

That Canal Street does look beautiful. So how's the fit and finish? Action smoothness? Any blade play?

By the way, the Ring Opening Knife is going to have A-2 steel.

I put a new edge on this knife today. It finally got dull enough to the point that it would be a crime not to. Using the Lanksy stones ( coarse and medium ) I used the 25 degree angle slot on the jig. The steel if a lot harder than I thought it would be. The steel ground clean with the stones. Not gummy at all. It takes and holds a new edge quite well. The reason I bought this piece was to see if their representative was being completely honest with me and from what I have seen, he most definetly was.

Glad to hear, Greg. It's good to hear the perspective from someone who is using somethine with an eye on really understanding its performance. Appreciate you keeping us informed.

I spent years (decades even) perfectly happy with Victorinox steel. If it's better than that, then it's good enough for this user.
However, as I get older I am liking carbon more & more for the aesthetics as they develop a patina. Also, as I do a bit more carving & camping now I suspect my appreciation of 'good' steels may change.

I checked out CSC's website yesterday, but the only D2 I could find were on some special fixed blade & folder sets. Anyone found SCS folders with D2 in their own right? (I haven't seen then, but I suspect the ones on fleabay may have been out of this 'special' range?)

Heheh, I think that we may be appreciating that patina more as we are getting a little of it on us, we hope, as we age. I like to tell folks that I'm not getting old, I'm getting vintage! Sounds good anyway. :D

I have the CSC D2 trapper coming, but I don't know if it was part of a special run or not.

I've used my Swiss Champ to make some walking sticks in the past. While I'm not much of a whittler, yet, I've found that SAK seems to work better for me as a whittler than mosty anything else I've used before. I've always been happy with the performance of Victorinox steel and I've used it hard at times. That reminds me, I need to stuff a SAK in my other pocket on the way out this morning.

ADDED: I got the Canal Street D2 Trapper in the mail today. After going to the website and doing a search of the numbers on the box end it showed that this was indeed part of a folder/fixed set orinigally as seen here: http://store.canalstreetcutlery.com/ltd2.html
