Canal Street Half Moon Trapper ????

I have not see a Half Moon in person. Looking at the pictures here and on-line it appears that the Half Moon has a slight recurve as that a slight distortion in the pictures? Does 14-4 CrMO hold an edge long?

Hi Dornblaser,

None of mine have a recurve. I think its just the pictures. The blade itself is slightly angled downward but straight until you hit the belly. I think its the angle along with the handle shape that makes it look like it has a recurve.

I'm not the best judge on edge holding as I really only use it for food prep.

I did. I also found this thread. I guess I was looking for more confirmation as I can't find much information on the steel outside of the bladeforums and it has been around for a while. No offense meant, I am just trying to decide on a 3 3/4 - 3 7/8" trapper.

None taken. I see you haven't been on this forum very long. If you hang out here awhile, you may notice that I am always careful to differentiate between fact and opinion. If I say that something "is", then either I have the data sheets or I have made the comparison myself.

In this case, for edge retention, I have made a formal comparison, cutting manila rope:

Here is a prior thread, which details the test method:

For composition, here are the data sheets.

IMO, the Canal Street Half moon trapper is an excellent buy. I would not hesitate to buy another if I were after another trapper.

EyeGor....

A.G. Russell did a run of 200 in 2009 of the Pearl Mica Half Moon Trapper's..though the model number ended in xxxx310....

I saw that as well but I think those are the White Buffalo mica that was referenced recently. But the new post reminded me that I haven't called yet. Thanks again.

I really appreciate everyone who contributed to this thread, especially the exquisite CSC photos. After speaking with the factory and DropPoint I determined that mine is 1 of 25. Not that it mattered that much to me but it is nice to know.

Eyegor, are you in the Pine Bush area? I've been over to Droppoint myself a number of times, Mike's a great guy. Has me doing the photography for him.

I am a transplant to the Ellenville area. Just the other side of the ridge. The site looks great BTW

Artmichalek,
I've been considering purchasing the same knife from SS. How is the spring pressure on yours in terms of resisting closing, i.e. holding the blade open while it's in use? Thank you.

ea 42 & Eyegor-I'm originally from Orange County. My father had a hardware store for many years. I worked in it as a teenager but spent more time than I should have staring at the knives in the big Robeson display!

It's softer than the Case slimline trapper, but not so much that it doesn't feel secure in use. It's definitely a slicing knife though.

Nice looking stuff. Resin based, like what bowling balls are made of.

I've resisted buying one of these for quite some time. It may be time to give in to the urge.
