As I posted in the "Whatcha got on order" thread, I recently ordered and received a new Canal Street Cutlery Half Moon Trapper, this time with Panama White Linen micarta covers. The HMT is 3 3/4" closed with a 3 1/4" Turkish clip blade. The blade steel is Latrobe's 14-4 CrMo which is equivalent to 154CM. Nickel Silver bolsters, stainless spring and scales. This was my first non-GEC traditional knife in 4 months and my first Half Moon I've ordered in just over 2 years. I've always been a fan of the HMT but have been trying different patterns (I hope CSC makes a 2 blade jack out of the HMT one day...). I jumped on this one with white linen. It's fit and finish is up there with the best of my CSCs. Smooth opening and closing with good snap at both ends. Pull about a 4 on the scale. No blade play or gaps. The blade was hair popping sharp as pretty much all my CSCs have been.

I believe this one is an exclusive SFO for BF dealer DP Hunter. His site is www.droppointhunter.com. Below is a dealer's pic.

The linen micarta and cream color give it an aged ivory look in my eyes while being more durable and requiring less maintenance.

Here's the white linen with my only 2 other linen covered pocket knives. The top is a Rick Menefee Back Pocket with green linen micarta. The bottom one is a Mike Alsdorf Slimline Trapper with black linen micarta. If I could only change one thing on the CSC HMT is to have micarta slightly thicker and then rounded a bit to bring out the layers of micarta as can be seen on the other 2.

Very nice, Trand. Might be too early, but how do like the steel, for both ease of sharpening and edge holding?

You said it came sharp, but I assume you at least stropped it. ;)

Thanks Jeff. I haven't stropped it, it was just that sharp. The ones I've used in the past held their edge very well for my light tasks, mostly food prep. The thin blade just works well in that role. The sharpening I've done in the past has been with a DMT diamond sharpener so it wasn't difficult. I understand that CSC's heat treats can get up to 61RC and they recommend diamond or ceramic sharpeners rather than stones.

Here's a pic of my other HMTs minus the 2 abalones. Those have been gifted to my sisters.

There are (too) many fine knives there! Such as,

But, I digress.

The linen micarta looks great on this pattern, and does add an aura of extra refinement to the knife-- the nod to ivory, as you've described.

Interestingly, and of course as a matter of personal taste, I much prefer this newer knife's less contoured appearance to that of the other two micarta examples shown, especially for this particular pattern. The others look slightly "G-10ish'/artificial to me in comparison (I associate the layered appearance more with that material, and to the detriment of a Traditional look).

Thanks for the in-depth glimpse!

No problem P. Happy to help spend other people's money :D

I understand your feelings about the rounding of the micarta. I just think it would have looked more like ivory with the contours being more evident. A lot of the ivory I've seen have that sort of pattern and coloration.

As for g10, I don't have many knives left with that. Of the ones I do have, they are almost all MOHs have flat g10 slabs which looks more like the HMT to me. I do have to admit that the 1 traditional knife in g10 that I have does resemble your remark. Here's my Gene Wiseman ultralight front pocket with jade green g10.

In looking for the above pics, I found I forgot about this Dan Burk slimline trapper I have. Also in green linen micarta.

Very nice HMT collection, Trand, I really like the quality of my CSC Pinch in reclaimed chestnut. Canal Street fits me better than GEC.

Thanks Jim. I wasn't aware of the Red Coke micarta. I haven't tried one of their jacks yet. I think the HMT frame would work great in that set up.

Thanks Kris. The reclaimed chestnut is some nice stuff with an interesting story too.

Ah, okay. That does make sense....

Thanks for the further examples. There's no way I would have identified the Gene Wiseman's covers as having G10 (that's a good thing in my book, in a traditional application. :)).

How is the back spring? Soft...med...nail breaker?

Chris D.:D

To me its a 4. A 1 being the blade has no pull, 10 you can't open it, and 5 being a Vic Pioneer. I haven't had a CSC knife with a blade pull more than 4.

Jade green g10 is hard to capture. Especially in the scale-less version I have. I found another pic of a g10 knife, a peanut, and this one has flat sides.

Sweet Half Moon, congrats!

I really like that pattern and was very tempted when I saw it. Makes me want to go put my red stag Half Moon in my pocket.

CSC makes some good looking trappers. That ivory color is outstanding! That particular capped model is extra fine looking.

Looks very much a top drawer knife. With a bit of age and use on those handles it will look even better! I'm an enthusiast for micarta on traditionals, it usually suits them particularly well and this is a clear example. I have a Bark River re-handled in a Ghost Jade G-10, it's almost eerie.....but it enhances the knife (better than the original Bocote handles that warped and shrank back in under 2 years...)

Thanks, Will

Same here and I have >20.

My pale jade HMT arrived today. Wonderful looking knife.

CSC does some neat stuff with their Red Trout line.

Trand,
thanks for the thread and pictures. I also wish that CSC came out with a two bladed jack with these handles. It looks so nice.

I have to admit that I was expecting something a little different when I saw Panama...........Trapper in the title.:D

Nevertheless, it makes a nice addition to your great HMT collection.

that green wiseman knife with the translucent handle is, well, kind of spooky or something. i dont think i have ever seen anything like that.
very interesting, thanks for showing it!

These are sweet and the handle material is very classy looking. I also enjoyed looking at your collection and all the different handle materials. Thank you, Trand
