Canal Street Panama White Linen Half Moon Trapper

The cream micarta reminds me of the Amex presidents set of knives Schrade released during the 80's.

Thanks guys!!

Same here and I have >20.

My pale jade HMT arrived today. Wonderful looking knife.

CSC does some neat stuff with their Red Trout line.
I'd like to see some pics of it when you get a chance. With Jade, its hard to see the texture. Do you know if its g10 or another material?

that green wiseman knife with the translucent handle is, well, kind of spooky or something. i dont think i have ever seen anything like that.
very interesting, thanks for showing it!
As Will mentioned, it's got a bunch of names. I've heard of Jade g10 and Ghost green g10 before. I've seen a few Bark Rivers with this material which made me ask Gene to use it.

This thread convinced me try out Canal Street knives, I invested in a couple of the reclaimed chestnut handled knives. I'm impressed!

Very nice Scott. I just gave my CSC Pinch in reclaimed chestnut to my friend who became a new dad. I like the Pinch so much that I bought another, in A.G. Russell's India stag, en route.

I'm a big fan of CSC...I just wish they offered more knives in carbon, I prefer the look and feel of carbon steel.

What do these two knives have in common?

? I thought CSC are made in the old Schrade Cutlery building in Ellenville or just on the same street?

I don't know the exact location of the old Schrade building, but Schrade is in fact what they have in common, and in my opinion it shows in the way that they are executing their knives today.

Here is a little excerpt from the history of Canal Street posted on http://www.droppointhunter.com/TheCanalStreetTradition (I checked they are a BF dealer).

...He persuaded twelve of the Cutlers from the Schrade Specialty Knife Division in Ellenville, each with 30+ years of experience making Uncle Henry and Old Timer knives, to join him in that pursuit. They set up shop at 30 Canal Street in Ellenville, a former knife workshop dating back to Ellenville's cutlery tradition in the mid 19th century, and they committed themselves to an elevation of that traditions – returning to man's roots...

I highly recommend going over and reading the articles about Canal Street on droppointhunter, they are really interesting and have tons of info about the knives themselves. (look at the "Points of Interest" column on the right)

The background!

... I have no idea (what was your first clue), but will say again I love the bone on that top knife.

~ P.

Thanks P! It is some very sweet stuff indeed. They call it smooth sunset bone, I happened to really like the way the pores in the bone show up. I'll try to get a more detailed picture of the bone later today, it reminds me of camel bone that I have seen.

The others beat me to it, with their superior and factual based knowledge.

I felt flippancy coming on...:D Like what do they have in common? Er, excessive blade-play? Rebuilt from other knives  , sunk joints, right, or both do have really good handles that make you want to carry them!

Thanks, Will

Hah..I'll say that the Canal Street is a good specimen, tight all around and as you said some fine looking bone handles

Thanks guys!!

I do not have the eqt. to take decent photos.

The offering's pics are reasonably accurate.

Yes they're in the old Schrade building, which was Ulster Knife Co. before that. LOTS of history in that place!!

The Smooth Sunset bone HMT was my first CSC. I too loved the bone and it is still my favorite of the bunch. I know that they have used camel bone in the past (the gray and green ones specifically say camel bone) but I don't recall if smooth sunset was camel bone too.

I don't believe it's G10, but not sure of what name it actually goes by, we basically call 'em all micarta in the shop :-) . Here's a shot of one that didn't quite pass muster, but you can get a good idea of the coloring, almost looks like it should glow in the dark:

The smooth sunset bone is definitely cow bone, there is a similarly colored camel bone that was used on some of the older style stockmans but it had some whitish streaks through it and was more mottled in color.

No problem P. Happy to help spend other people's money :D

I understand your feelings about the rounding of the micarta. I just think it would have looked more like ivory with the contours being more evident. A lot of the ivory I've seen have that sort of pattern and coloration.

As for g10, I don't have many knives left with that. Of the ones I do have, they are almost all MOHs have flat g10 slabs which looks more like the HMT to me. I do have to admit that the 1 traditional knife in g10 that I have does resemble your remark. Here's my Gene Wiseman ultralight front pocket with jade green g10.
