That there is a recipe for some serious constipation, just like all MRE's, no bueno unless its a last resort.

I have actually had no problem with MRE's (military type) for long periods of time. I have eaten them for a couple weeks at a time (and I mean pretty much nothing but them) and I never had any constipation problems. The only problem I had was my stools changing color, but that probably has something to do with me trading other parts of my meal to get my hands on a couple extra packages of the MRE cheese spread every time I eat them (MRE Cheese + Crackers = Amazing).

MRE peanut butter is GOLDEN.

That being said, I'll eat that chicken, MREs and canned sandwiches any day.

I never had constipation from MREs either.

I never bring bread backpacking because it gets smashed.

While working on a backcountry trail crew we still liked to eat sandwiches for lunch and such. So to combat the issue of crushed loafs of bread, a lesson learned the hard way, we started taking Tortillas and pita/flat bread into the woods with us. It packs very easy, taste great, and is pretty cheap to. You should look into it for your next trip it makes a mean PB & J.

What is horrifying you guys so much about the canned chicken?
It looks like it's just got some congealed fat on it...I've seen more horrible things when i take leftover chicken soup out of the fridge.

rofl ok that was funny. I love it.

Hell, I'd give them a shot.

'Course I like MREs also. As far as digestive problems. . .I've had MREs that made me poop out a cinder block a week later, and some (five fingers of death, among others) that came out shortly after they went in and looked much the same. SISO.

I'm wierd but I love MRE's... this thread though has made my stomach uneasy.. that canned chicken... Anyone see the canned chicken challenge on Tosh.O ? hehehe.

No , I would not try it. Unless I was real hungry.

a buddy of mine got some MRE sandwiches at a recent gunshow. he said they were very good... but he didn't get any for me so i can';t attest to teir quality.

same thi ng as a canwich, but not in a can.

I'd try them. I don't know how useful they would be as wilderness survival food. The can design is to take advantage of the existing vending technology, e.i. soft-drinks vending machines. For wilderness survival or backpacking, the can may take too much space, although I may consider having a couple for car camping or to have something in the glove compartment to munch in case I get stranded.

You can go that route... I prefer soup. Quality beef and vegetables versus a processed sandwich... Progresso and Chunky Campbells for the win!

+1
Not much can beat a good can of soup. A great meal with little preparation needed, and undoubtedly much better for you than these canned sandwiches. And that canned chicken doesn't look to bad when I think about frozen turkeys, look much the same, just come in different packaging. Though I can see where pulling a bird out of a can can seem unnatural, very unnatural.

As unappetizing as it looks, that canned chicken makes sense for part of an emergency home survival food stash. People use it for chicken casseroles and for the ever popular (in S. Georgia) chicken and rice. When a hurricane or other natural disaster knocks out the power and the roads are blocked with flooding and debris, a hot meal of chicken and rice cooked in a pot on the old Coleman might be really good. I bought one of those Sweet Sue chickens in a can as a gag gift for a friend once. I got this list of recipes from the Sweet Sue site:

Chicken Bacon Quiche
Chicken Breast Wrap
Chicken Cacciatore Capellini
Chicken Salad Deluxe
Chicken Stroganoff
Chicken Taco Bake
Easy Chicken Curry
Easy Southern Chicken Pie
Hot Turkey Salad
Italian Chicken Vegetable Pasta Salad
Quick Chicken Noodle Soup
Sweet Sue Chicken and Fruit Salad
Sweet Sue Chicken Salad deluxe (2)
Sweet Sue Chicken Stir Fry
Sweet Sue Easy Chicken Enchiladas

Mmmm. Enjoy!

I can't see carrying canned anything. I use beef stew mix sometimes, repackaged for individual use. Used to carry a Nalgene full of it for my main courses. Now that they have foil-packed tuna, that's hard to beat. They both get old really quick, though.

Amen...add shelf stable bread, MRE jelly, and have Ranger pudding for dessert. Loved it.

I don't know if there's a modern equivalent for the old MRE dessert "Maple Nut Cake". We called it the "Maple Butt Plug". MRE's also made your turds woodland camo patterned. LNT minus the cathole. Was that by design?
So many things I wonder about...

I could eat off of the MRE "wheat snack bread" (beats the hell out of the crackers), peanut butter, and jalapeno cheese spread, with a dessert of the pound cake, and that "fortified orange drink" for a good, long time.

That sounds pretty good! If they have all that stuff nowadays, maybe they should start putting a cigarette in the MREs again, so you can kick back and bask in the afterglow from eating one.
