Canis Issue - Liner Clip Screw Threads?

I got my Canis late last week. Love it! But I prefer deep carry clips. No problem, I installed my preferred clip that use on all my Yojimbo 2's. I know it takes a little longer screw and I had some in my tool box.

Upon mounting it I noticed that the liner was being forced in. I discovered the clip screws were threading into to scale not into the liner.

I have discovered that the original clip was held on by screws threaded into the scale that never engaged the threaded holes in the liner.

I have discovered that standard Spyderco 2-56 screws will not screw into the the threaded holes in the liner. I'm not sure if they are too big or the wrong thread pitch.

Someone please educate me. Are Taichung knives threaded for metric screws? Do I have a defective Canis?

I would think that Taiwan uses the metric system like most countries(but not ours very much), I would call/email Spyderco and ask the experts.

Spyderco has used threaded inserts in G10 scales before. The native chief has them. I used an aftermarket clip and screws and they were longer and wedged the scale off the back spacer slightly. It's possible this is happening here too. Did you try putting the factory clip back.

Yes I tried putting the stock clip back but the screws are too short to reach the threaded liner holes and the threads in the G-10 are stripped out. Seems they were only screwed into the G-10 to begin with. There are no metal threaded inserts in the scales.

Thanks! I saw 2mm x 0.4mm x 6mm long in an old post on the Spyderco Forum. I ordered some 6 mm and 8 mm long from Boltdepot.

By same issue do you mean the screws are threaded into the G-10 and not into the liner?
The screws that came with my Canis were not long enough to reach the liner. I stupidly attempted to use some longer 2-56 Spyderco screws but of course they couldn't work and merely screwed into the scale and then pushed on the liner. By then my 2-56 screws had opened the G-10 holes enough so the original screws (assumed to be 2 mm X .4 mm) no longer grab the threads in the G-10.

I'm expecting some 2 mm X 0.4 mm screws later this week.

Sal offered that I could send the knife in but I like it so much I don't want to part with it. Besides, the problem is partially my fault (not checking screw size) and partly Taichung (screws didn't engage threads in liner).

It sounds a design flaw to me.

While from an overall perspective that's true, I see it more like either the wrong length screws were specified or the wrong screws were picked from the parts bin when the first knives were assembled. I'd prefer it was all perfect from the start but as an early adapter I'm disappointed but not shocked by a minor issue. The rest of my Canis is perfect in terms of fit, finish, and feel. Especially sharp with a long cutting edge for the blade.

If I had not chosen to change the clip, I never would have encountered the screw problem.

Just a note that some deep pocket clips (for example MXG) are significantly thicker than Spyderco clips.

Having the right clip screw length is tricky as some of us carry tip-down and don't want the clip screws to touch the PB washers. Fractions of a mm matter for them to be deep enough in the liner, but not stick out inside.

Roland.

Same issue simply means I attempted to install a Lynch deep carry clip on my Canis & ran into the same issue. When the stock screws didn't work, I tried some longer screws and got the same result as you did with the exception that miraculously I didn't strip the G10. Was able to re-install the factory clip successfully. Hoping there's a solution with regard to installing a deep carry clip...the knife hangs out of my pocket enough with the stock clip for it to be noticed. As a matter of fact, someone inquired about the knife (clipped in my pocket) while shopping

I got a Canis on the way and am planning on installing the lynch clip. Now I’m probably gonna return it and wait for the new batch if it’s true that the screw is only screwing into the G10, which i agree is a design flaw.

We check inventory here and believe the problem is the thicker clip requires longer screws.

Thanks for checking, i guess in this case it's a non-issue then. I could live without a deep carry clip, but screw only contacting g10 makes me paranoid :)

Huge Spyderco fan - been buying & collecting them for years:

Been waiting on this knife since it was announced.....bought it the minute I was contacted by the dealer. Really like it. It's going back to the dealer or onto the Exchange. Whether it's truly flawed or not, for my use it's flawed.
