Hey all, here's that canister damascus (the finished version) I got to make at George's with his very cool press. The top "Claw" (Ironwood and Buckeye Burl) went this weekend at Ohio. I get to keep the bottom "Tracker" (African Blackwood and Veracite) for a bit longer. I really wanted to keep them both to be honest. I want a press, I want a press, I want a press, I want a press.

Darn nice work J.!!! I know what you mean about wanting a press...I've had all the parts to build mine now for 6 months, but just finally pulled the steel from the racks and put it in the staging area under my welding table...so looks like I'll be getting a press soon! :D You gonna teach me to weld up beautiful cans like that when I get mine finished!? :)

The canister damascus has very attractive patterns. Nice work, Neilson.
:) :)

Those are just plain awesom, Jay! Great work. Yess, you need a press, you need a press, you NEED a press! I havn't done any can work with mine...yet, but even doing the "regular" stuff it is great. I only got to use a power hammer once, and it was impressive and a great tool, but nothing beats the control and variety of work you can do with a press.

Went to the Koval show in Ohio this past weekend but, we'll be at Marlboro this one coming up. Hope I get to see you there. You can fill me in. There's gonna be a NECKA table again, right?

J yes
if Joe gets the Fee in it's getting late.. I'm going anyway,
at least for the morning..staying the night before.
will you be there the night before?

Looking good J. Hope to see you this weekend.
The insert in one of those sheath isn't that the skin I gave Tess?
If you want to lay over Sunday nite after the show, at my place let me know,

J.

Was great to meeet you and Tess this past weekend. Excellent work on those blades. Even with high quality pictures as you have, they can't compare to seeing the pieces in person. Congrats on not being able to keep that one a little longer...

Man did I learn a bunch at this show.

Best of luck to you and Tess on the next show.

Darren: If you ever got up here to New England I could show you how to canister weld. It is easyer than any other welding. You just leave it in the forge for about 20 minutes and press. When you think it is ready go have another cigarrette or beer or both. I believe Bruce B. gave me that advise and it is true.

Hey I.G., thanks! I may have to take you up on that offer sometime! Heck, the trip might be worth it just to see what this whole relish business is about. :D

Dan: We'll be there but, not until that morning.

George: Thanks, the top inset is ostrich. Didn't I send you a picture of the sheath with the eel skin? I'm getting old.

Dan: Thanks and same to you, buddy. I don't know if you caught this or not. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=280428

Darren: Once I get a forge I'd be happy to show you what George showed me on Can. welding. If you go to George's though, stop by here first for all the warnings.
:D ;) :D

Thanks for the highlight. Yes, I had missed that posting. It was one great weekend chattin' with you and the rest of those incredible blade makers. Sure was a change to talk nothing but blades.

I didn't catch on to what canister welding was until you explained it. That is some cool process and very cool damascus. If that increcible canister weld is what you can do without a press, can't wait till you get a press and really show off...

Hey J-

Really nice looking pieces there.

I'm not being negative at all, but I'm curious why you needed a can to weld up this steel? I've done powder and BIG stacks inside cans, but anything else seems like a lot of extra work. Of course you don't have to worry about flux, but if you have to grind a can off, that's a PAIN! :)

Like I said J, just trying to see what you other folks are up to and why...I probably shouldn't, all this thinking makes my head hurt :D

Nick

(Hey IG, tried to pm you back but pc's not cooperating. Hope all is well...I'm still up from yesterday...LOL).

*edited to add: If you're using a stainless can that pops right off after the first forge weld, then just nevermind what I asked!* :)

I am hoping to get it shipped to Rhino this week, I try'g to get all my orders current. I may have a really job lined up. Buffing SS and titanium for artificial hip and knee joints.:( :(
