canoe trip

NB 16, Last time I was at wally world, (AKA Walmart) they had a usable cookset for about 8 bucks, that comes with a handle and a little set all nested up. Tell your mom she needs to buy it for you as the coffee cans are soldered up with lead solder. Maybe not true, but sometimes it is.

Also the paint on the coffee can might be toxic, and get her to buy you a small stove. Tell her it's cheaper than the fine for setting a forest fire....

I will buy a better cookset but we do not have much money being that we are only 16:o

Find a military surplus store and buy a good used set for five bucks. Will be more heavy duty than Walmart chinese stuff. Might have dents and scuffs, but the stuff works. You can buy a matched set or mix-n-match til your heart's content. Pick up one of their folding can openers too if you are taking canned goods. They cost 25 cents or so. Look at the rocket boxes and ammo cans for waterproof storage (maps, wallet, cell phone etc.), another five maybe. Yeah you can do it on a tight budget. You'll spend more on food and gas than the gear if you shop well and watch yourself. Tell the shop owner what your adventure plans are and ask him to help. Most of them are ex-GI and will darn near give you stuff if they understand your budget and plans.

Codger

I haven't to (wally world) in a while so i'll check that out. And Rescueriley Iwill be bringing a buck nighthawk and my leatherman.

I bought my 2 pots around your 16 too. 11 years later they are still going strong. Stay away from aluminum stuff, even though they are cheap, cook anything acidic in them will cause some to leach out, and Al are neuro toxins.

NB16, Looks like you have some good tips already. Here are a couple additonal things not mentioned yet , just in case you have not thought of them. Some are obvious but simply trying to help.

- Proper PFD for each person
- At least 1 extra paddle per canoe
- Fully stocked First-Aid kit
- Waterproof bag(s) to carry critical items
- Multiple Nalgene bottles for water and a Water Filter

I think most other items have been covered as far as food, food prep, fire, shelter, clothing. I would bring a hat, sunglasses and suntan lotion as well.

Have a great trip.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet... Snake bite kit? Got any down there?

Couple guys started out into the swamps on a canoe trip one weekend and passed an old trapper shack. just after passing the shack they stopped for a break. One guy say right on a coral snake and got bit on the butt. The second guy saw he was in danger but didn't know what to do... He ran back to the shack and found an old trapper there. The trapper described how to cut the wound and suck the poison out. the guy asked what would happen if he didn't do that. the trapper replies "your friend will die".
He ran back to his friend who had his pants down and was leaning over a log with his rear in the air. "what did the old man say??"
"you're going to die"

good joke... that was a joke right:( snake bite kit sounds good.thanks everybody for the great tips:D

Sherlock, AL is not a neuro toxin. if it was, all the people who talk tums, rolaids and other heart burn meds would be raving loonies. Main Ingredient in them is aluminum salts. This is a old wives tales told by steel cookware door to door salesmen in the twenties.

Really? I remember from my toxicology class that Al, especially if methylated is considered a neurotoxin. Gonna go find my old textbook this weekend to make sure I didn't confuse it with something else.
