I'm a budding slipjoint fanatic, I guess, and I'd like to find a good canoe.

I have a trapper and a copperlock (I know, not really a slipjoint) from Case, a nice big stockman from Schrade (OT), a little tiny Old Timer (don't know what pattern it would qualify as... maybe a mini-muskrat), and some other miscellaneous slippies.

I've been looking at Eye Brand, since I'm not really picky about "Made in USA," and since I'd rather have carbon steel. Can anyone recommend a good maker, or a nice place to find a good deal on a decent-quality canoe?

Thanks,
Alex.

Canoe patterns are my favorite pattern......flat and slim with two blades....Canoe's are both handy and easy to pocket. I can recommend both Queen and Eye without reservation !

I have to 2nd Cumberland Knife Works. Mr. Bill Horn is a great guy to deal with and i think he'll inspect the knife personally before it goes out.

Also check out this site: http://www.cuttersandcollectors.com/eyebrand.html

This is where I first heard of Eye Brand and Ron seems to have a nice Eye BRand Canoe with stag handles. And if you order from Mr. Ron Ryder you get one of his handmade leather slip cases. Not bad!

Anyways happy hunting!

I have a Queen canoe with cocobolo handles and D2 blades. One heckuva pocketknife!

Queen Bonestag Canoe for me.
EDC'd, not fussed over, been brake cleanered, mineral oiled, WD 40'd, dropped about once a week (watch pocket carry, it falls out when I get undressed), the only bad thing that happened was the shield falling out.
A little drop of Liquid Nails fixed that.
Convexed the edge on a mouse pad and all it has seen since is a strop, or sheet of cardboard.

Notice the lack of a blade etch ;)
Now that was alot of work :D

DEEP is right!
If the sun hits it just the right way, it'll still show.

That first pass on the 220 grit can be a heartbreaker

Thanks, guys.

Ebbtide, that's a great pic! I love old marbles & pocketknives that look old. Perhaps a big wooden spool of kite string too... :)

The Queen bonestag has been calling me lately, too... But you're right, that etch really gets tiresome.

Did you use paper or a wheel to remove it? And what grit did you take it to last, to polish?

Thanks,
Alex.

puukkoman, as a budding slipjoint fanatic I believe you need a custom canoe. I found one for you. A Murray Sterling interframe damasteel and goldlip pearl.

Case still lists a canoe model in amberbone with CV(carbon) steel as current production. I don't have one, but have handled one and its a nice knife.

I have one each of the Queen and Case, and they each have their plusses. The Case is easier to sharpen IMHO, but the Queen's edge lasts longer.

The Amber bone on the Case is great, but I hate that Indian in the Canoe etch on the main blade.

Fit and finish on mine are about equal, but the Queen snaps better.

Thomason, you're right. I do need a custom canoe. First, I need to inherit a small fortume from a long-lost great uncle, however.

That's really nice! Do you have any of Murray Sterling's knives? Know of any other custom slipjoint makers? I've heard of Tony Bos, and a few others I can't remember now.

Thanks so far, guys.

I've got this one in sheep-horn. As far as other custom slipjoint makers, I would not even know where to start with that question. There are so many. Maybe someone else around here has a list or reference, it wouldn't surprise me if there was one somewhere.

I have the Case Amber bone Canoe and a Queen in D2 with Delrin, its not even close, the Case wins hands down.

I know things vary but here are my observations.

Case is slimmer and sits nice in a little cottom pouch in the pocket. The springs are fiendishly crisp. F&F was better than the Queen. The CV holds a great edge, granted probably not as long as the D2 Queen but a 2 minute job with an EdgePro with #1000 tapes gets it back ready for surgery (this is my EDC and gets a lot of jobs on shipping cartons).
:)

I only have Case canoes, but I highly recommend on in CV. Mine with chestnut bone handles is one of my favorite EDC's.
