On a Spyder, Rat, or Byrd. I recently "lost" my only EDC... So now I'm looking at the Spyderco Tenacious, Ontario Rat 2, and Byrd Raven 2.
I really like the Tenacious cause of the combo edge. Enough to forget about the other two.

The Raven 2 has better steel.

Rat 2 is cheaper and smaller.

Right now it's between the Spydercos but I keep going back and forth. Do you think the better steel is worth going with the Raven 2, and maybe get the Ontario Rat 1 combo edge down the road?

Ontario Rat 2 is a great knife, one of my favorites. I don't know if BD1 is much better than AUS8, I was not a fan of the BD1 on the Manix2 LW. I haven't owned a Raven 2, but the Tenacious is also a great knife, quite a bit bigger than the Rat 2 though. Out of the 3 I would pick a Rat 2.

The Bladeforums answer is: "all of them".

And at this level, it's a serious option!

The buy-in for all three is what? A hundred or less? (I don't know the price of the Raven, so correct me if I'm wrong).

Even if you drop them all in your cart at one place for the free S&H, rather than trying to get the absolute best price by shopping around, you will have three of the names that come up every single time we discuss "good value".

So buy all three. Keep the two you like the most, gift the other to a friend, and let the experience with them inform your future purchasing decisions.

I would be inclined to say a rat 2 because I really like the rat that I own. I really like Aus 8 as it's easy to touch up and ontario Aus 8 holds a decent edge. I found my rat 1 to have top notch quality and tolerances and honestly for half the price of the byrd I think its a better deal. Maybe save up a bit more and get a Delica ($65).

Thanks for the quick help! I just wish the rat 2 had a combo edge or was a touch bigger. Delica looks nice, thanks of the suggestion.

I'm like warm about the Byrd line. Too much hit or miss.

Both the tenacious and rat2 are good options. I tend to grab the rat 2 over the tenacious as it fits in a pocket easier and does all I need.

If you want something bigger would you want to consider a rat 1. Its fairly large but I've never found it to be too big for edc and general use. And its available in d2 with serations

Maybe but just being honest I don't want to pull it out all the time and scare anyone. Rat 1 seems like a pretty big edc

Eventually that desire for a combo edge will fade. Get yourself a Rat 2 and you won't regret it.

I find it if I pull out of 3 1/2 inch folder in don't worry about other peoples reactions they don't seem to have a reaction . Use it matter-of-factly and people won t pay attention.

quick, go order one of the new Carbon Fiber/G10 handled D2 Rats available from many prominent sellers as " Limited Editions " ..... combo edge, and just a touch bigger than the rat2.....it's alotta knife for 59.00

your welcome

Good point

Hawgsnawt - Is the limited edition not the same size as the model 1?

yes, it is....same size as model 1.... which is just a touch larger than the rat 2.... not sure if you've ever held one in hand or not... but its just about the right size for EDC for me, I honestly couldn't imagine going smaller, but I have large hands so..../shrug

I haven't had one in my hand. Just going off the specs of my old knife.

Slept on it and leaning toward the raven 2 but availability seems low right now. If I do get the raven 2 and I still want a knife with serration, then I'll add the tenacious, delica, or rat 1. If I just want something smaller I'll add the delica or rat 2. Or I'm gonna change my mind by tomorrow and ask if I should get a benchmade or kershaw:cool:
