EEK! I have a double post (this seems to happen to me VERY often!). Anyway, I can't delete the double. Don't tell me why in computer terms, but WHY was it set up in such a way that not even the author can delete his/her own post? Could this possibly changed? If not, could a moderator please check up on my stuff, as this happens to me whether I use the mouse to click or the spacebar.

Thanks
Howie

Hi Howie,

You were able to delete your own posts up until a few weeks ago. Then some people started deleting posts just because they did not like what they had written in them, so it was changed. You can still edit your posts though, and change vicious comments into little smiley faces!

Some members found they could take advantage of a bug in the delete function and took it upon themselves to delete other members' posts. So now we are returning to the older procedure of using the edit function to delete the text of the post, replacing it with a brief message such as "double post" or "damn double post" or the abbreviation "ddp" in explanation. If there is more than one extra post it is unnecessary to put an explanatory note in each of them, unless you can think of humorous variations.

Like editing typos, double posting is nothing to be embarrassed about -- we've all done it; nobody is laughing at you ... honest ... well, maybe quietly snickering, but no laughing out loud....

Howie,

I'm guessing a moderator will also respond to your question but the right answer is that some folks were deleting ENTIRE THREADS because they didn't like the some of the Responses they were getting. If you Started a thread, and deleted your first post, Everyone elses responses in that thread also disappeared. This is an apparent flaw in the forum software that Mike and Spark are trying to get fixed. A lot of us felt this practice of wholesale thread deletion was Very unfair to other forum members.

It's True that some of these people had very good reason to do this, but it was not thought fair to a lot of other folks to delete an entire thread because the original poster had an issue with One respondant. At least One obnoxious poster ended up losing all posting priviledges.

So the Delete Message command was disabled for all of us. You can still Edit your own posts, even to the point of deleting ALL content. That you made a post will still show in the thread, but you DO NOT have to leave ANY content at all. If you want to change or retract anything you posted, or correct typos, you still can.

For more info on this Extremely Contentious issue, use the search function in the General forum to look for the 'Deleting posts' thread and the 'Disappeared threads' thread. There was a lot of amusing arguing going on over this issue. Check it out for yourself.

It was Not done to prevent you from changing your mind about something you said in Your Own posts or to keep a permanent record of posts. Just use the Edit function any way you want, even to delete everything you said. Hope this helps.

Automantic: vicious posts that someone feels the need to edit later SHOULD NOT BE POSTED to begin with. Stop. Wait. And Think before you start a Fire. This has been way too common recently. I know, I've almost done it myself. Lets all Try to get along, even while we disagree strongly about some issues.

(I just saw Cougar's post, so my response was unecessary I guess. I feel pretty strongly about this issue, and have noticed a number of people making all sorts of sinister conjectures about why this change was made. Just wanted to set the record straight.)

I have found that double posts are, often, caused by hitting the "back" button after posting.
Best bet is to wait for your post to appear and then use the "tree" at the top of the page and to click on the line that is the name of the current forum.

Or to click on the current forum name in the "Hop To" box at the bottom of the page.

We have asked the software developer that makes UBB (the software that makes this forum work) to include an option which will allow users to delete or edit their posts without effecting other posts in a thread. Maybe sometime soon

There should be a check for double posting in the next version of the software, or in a release that's coming out soon, one of the developers released a hack that did it, and if anyone was going to include it, he would.

So, there is hope.

Just remember: Don't double Click on the submit button. Don't hit reload when there's an error. When in doubt, check it out and save your text.
