Can't find a Wharncliffe!

Been a while since I've posted, but I've been lurking. I am intrigued by the wharncliffe blade style, and I would really like to pick one up. I prefer a flat edge, but may give into a modified wharnie if I can't find anything I like. Fixed blade or folder, doesn't matter. I have searched through the forum, as well as others, and can't seem to discover one that strikes my fancy, is readily available, and more at the production price point. I wish I could find a Cento 4, but they are seemingly non existent anymore. The spyderco yojimbo 2 seems too large, CRKT minimalist and SPEW seem cheap. I'd like to keep it around 200$ give or take.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks guys!

Yojimbo 2 feels pretty small to me. Hard to explain until you hold it. It's slightly shorter than the Para 2 physically

You could always go traditional like a SBJ, or just mod an Opinel if you want to get the price under $20.

There are plenty of Wharncliffe blades that you don't mention. What about the Kershaw models (e.g. the Needs Work)? Or maybe the Cold Steel Tuff Lite? Or the funky almost a wharnie Spyderco Chokwe?

What will you be doing with the knife? Are you looking for an expensive piece of pocket jewelry/toy? Are you looking to use it hard? You mention knives seeming cheap, so I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly here.

I had the same problem. Then I bit the bullet and added myself to the waiting list for Alan Davis. I used the Cold Steel Tuff Lite (not the mini) as a model and sent my specs to Alan. 5 months later (that's that part that made it horrible, but considering 1+ years for other customs it was doable) he produced a fantastic blade.

I can't really help otherwise, but I feel your pain.

I have handled a few kershaw "needs work" folders, I havent handled a cold steel tuff light, but it doesn't seem like the type I had in mind. I am more or less looking for a medium sized 3-4 inch blade, thinner profile for breaking down boxes and getting into packages at work. More of an all around utilitarian knife. I like the looks of the Random Leek, I am just not a fan of serrations. A centofante 4 seems like the perfect option, (great steel, build quality is great for $) but I cannot find one. I saw an Orange Barker FB wharnie somewhere on the forums here and loved it, but I don't think I want to put that much money into it now. Just seeking other recommendations.

Not to drag this off topic, but that's a sexy knife you have there. I've been carving with a Tuff Lite and Mini Tuff Lite, and if there's anything I'd change about them it's that they look kind of cheap and plastic-ey. A custom with the same sturdy shape, damascus, wood scales and a wire pocket clip? Me likey . . .

The Tuff Lite is actually a great, stout little knife but it's too short for your needs. Hmm, sounds like a Yojimbo 2 would be perfect. Or for a cheaper option, the Blackhawk Be-Wharned, maybe.

The Yojimbo2 is definitely on the small side. It is smaller in person than it looks in pics online. That's part of why I love it so much. I carry mine everywhere , everyday.

The Yojimbo2 is my favorite Spyderco of all time. And KW and GPK have them in stock right now.

Well, that's two for the yojimbo. Any other suggestions guys? Or is Spyderco going to get my money AGAIN this month :D

Case Sway Back Jack with Chestnut bone, and CV steel.

I love cases, but I feel as though I want a locking blade for this one. I will be testing the Wharncliffe blade style for my tasks, and if I end up liking it, I will definitely be picking up a Sway back jack to replace my current mini trapper. Thanks for the recommendation

I don't care much for the Random Leek myself, but the standard version is a darn fine cutter. And I'm particularly fond of my Swayback Jack, though most days I prefer OHO.

Otherwise, I'd see how long it'd take Phil Tham to build another wood/Ti Framelock Wharncliffe Flipper. Those things look awesome.

I also can't find the links right now, but there is a wharncliffe picture thread with a lot of cool stuff in it, and I seem to recall another maker trying to do a small fixed wharncliffe that caught my eye a month or two ago.
Best of luck - there are some really nice ones out there.

I vote for a GEC houndtooth. I have one, but haven't taken any pictures. Maybe I can take a photo with it next to a centofante 4 for comparison.
