Can't get burr with 600 grit : Edge Pro

and the recurve was such
BINGO !
Ding, Ding! Ding,
I believe the recurve was the trouble.
Bo, Bo, Bo . . . . you left out the fact that you were sharpening a recurve.
Some one might want to post a drawing but as I visualize it a wider stone is going to lay the angle of the rod back in the middle of a recurve trough . . . i.e., the sharpening angle is changed.

Bgentry: okay cool. For some reason I've never got a knife to cut circles in paper. Do you think if I use edge trailing strokes on the edge pro and go up to the 6000 grit tape it'd be able to cut circles in paper? When should I start using edge trailing strokes? At what grit?

Thanks for the help,

Bo

I'm not all that good at circle cutting either. My best circle cutting edges have been on blades that are thin in profile and that I polish quite a bit. I think when I had my Delica in ZDP-189 polished up on the Spyderco ultra fine, it was able to do some circles.

As for edge trailing, I'm just not sure. I haven't really studied it or played with it much myself. Murray Carter says that all finishing strokes should be done as edge trailing. He starts somewhere around the 4000 - 6000 JIS mark.

I've noticed overall that my blade performance is much better when I pay very careful attention to removing every last bit of the burr. That might be something for you to concentrate on for a little while and see how your results change.

Brian.

Wowbagger: oh! I did forget that! Yes it was a recurve. Can you explain in more detail how the stone changes the angle?
Okay so blades that are short as in not tall cut circles better?

Bgentry: okay I'm going to start doing edge trailing strokes after 1000 grit and see how that goes. And I'll pay close attention to removing all the burr. Does anyone know where to get a felt deburring block that they can plug on here?

Thanks for the help guys,

Bo

I use saw tooth, circles, and edge leading strokes when I'm trying to remove metal and establish the bevels and the apex. Even I stay raining the edge i go to strictly edge trailing.
