Can't make up my mind, so here I am..outdoor knife suggestions

I think I've narrowed it down to the one, the Buck Pathfinder #105. It is a bit smaller than the Special, while having a slightly bigger handle than the Woodsman. What do you guys think?

Although I do not own a pathfinder yet, I think that is a great choice considering your criteria. I recently bough a buck 110 and love it. I will be getting a pathfinder to accompany my 110 soon. I like the pathfinder because it is not very heavy if you will be hiking, fixed blade quality steel for the $$. I do like the woodsman alot too. You just can't go wrong with a Buck my just my .02

I love my Tak , it feels pretty good for camp chores & does a great job around the camp site, I own the D2 version.

I'd say the Rat-5:thumbup: . I shaved down the scales on my Rat-7 with a file and then sanded it down. Wear a respirator though. Micarta dust is nasty stuff.

The RAT3 is a great little knife. I really like mine and carry it in combo with a bigger knife, like a Busse (SFNO or Badger) or a Ranger. I'll bet the RAT5 is even better though with its longer handle.

Butch (Butcher_Block on the forums) makes a sweet knife or two that are close to your description, as does fiddleback (there's a recent thread on one of his, not sure what his prices are.) Otherwise I think that the basic Buck hunters are good knives, and I have an old SOG I've been carting around since the Gulf that is pretty handy, though a bit big and more in the "sharpened pry bar" side of things.

I'm working on a 4 inch spear point right now....but I can't honestly sell through the forums until I pay the fees, which seems to require me getting a debit card.

I like Bark River's knives a lot too.

Having just got a Fallkniven F1, I need to give a strong   for that model. You have nothing to fear about the rubber handle.

For real economy, the Mora 2000 might work for you while you save for The Big Knife.

I found the RAT-3 handle very comfortable. It's actually a fairly small knife and a good candidate for a trail knife-- tough and light.

Check out the Entrek Javalina too.

As PitDog pointed out the NRA/Benchmade/Snody knife is a very good field knife. Many of the Benchmade/NRA models are great buys.

You can get the short Ka-Bar 1251 for about $50

I think the Benchmade Rant is a very undervalued knife (I like the drop point vs. the bowie)

Consider the Benchmade fixed Griptilian along with the Ritter version.

Ditto on the Grohmann knives-- they are really lifetime cutting tools.

If you are looking at SOG's, check out the Field Pup-- a very good buy. It is hollow ground, which is not my preference.

And the secret is that they will all work --- ANY of the knives listed in this thread will serve you well and last a long time. You could go a lifetime in the woods with your moras and never miss a thing.

The Pathfinder was the first Buck I ever owned (1968?). Nice little knife, but using your criteria, I'd buy the Mora, and I'm a Buck fan! In fact, my favourite EDC folder, right now, is the Buck Alpha Dorado in 154CM (you can see it in my mini PSK post). But get the Mora.

Doc

Yeah, I keep wanting to recommend Bark River, but I don't own any of their knives so I can't honestly do that.

I guess I need to rectify that problem! :)

Been thinking about picking up a Micro Canadian as a backup to my CR Mountaineer II. Basically, turn it into a neck knife and then unload my Becker Necker which seems to have gotten rather more valuable than seems warranted of late.

Just pulled the trigger on a Mora 2000 and an 8" Old Hickory Butcher knife tonight. I'm planning on modifying the Old Hickory, and seeing what I can come up with.

I just picked up a Benchmade Activator Snody, in D2..flat grind, wood handle and a 3.5" blade. Its pretty cool, I really like it, and can't wait to take it out, its slim and light, and looks pretty tough. good leather sheath as well, I think you can pick them up for about $80 new.
