Hey BF,

So I called Canada Post about forms I need to fill out to get return a knife I bought from the US. However, Canada Post says there information US Border Patrol/Customs says it is prohibited to send knives from Canada to the United States... Any Canadians have any advice or anybody?

Should be good to go shipping knives to the u.s. from Canada as long as its not an automatic knife, then thats restricted.

You need to fill out forms to ship? Do you guys have to register knives or need some kind of permit in Canada? Can you ups or fed-ex?

The issue I was told was with US Customs not Canada apparently. Apparently US Customs classify knives as weapons, and I cannot ship weapons to the US. Maybe it was bad information from Canada post... but that is what they told me. US Customs says shipping knives to them is prohibited.

I just received two knives in the mail the other day from New Zealand, and being in a box labeled cutlery Im pretty sure US customs doesn't just consider all knives as weapons.

I've never heard of this. I've ordered knives from Canada before and I've never had an issue getting them. o_O

Generally putting some sort of prefacing descriptor in front of "knife" on the customs for is a good form of insurance against this sort of goof-up. "Camping knife", "hunting knife", "woodworking knife", "agricultural knife", etc. all denote a strictly non-weapon use that helps keep rookie customs agents from flipping out.

I thought that was a little weird also. I guess I will do more research, never shipped anything to the US before so not really sure of what forms I need to fill out.

I send knives across the border all the time. Most of the time I put "collectible cutlery" in the description. Postal workers know little of laws and sure arent the ones to ask.

Don't bother filling a form. Camping tools or Kitchenware are more than enough.
Been sending a lot of knives across many borders and never had a MIA so far.

I'm just putting my item description as "Hinderer 3.5" XM-18 Black" as I'm limited to 25 characters on this online form, is this an adequate description or should I just say campign knife?

I've had zero issues with Canada Post.
UPS on the other hand...whoo!
"We cannot ship weapons."
Meanwhile, I had just received a knife shipped from the USA by UPS...

So yeah, no problems with Canada Post.
Just list it as "knife", and ship it.

Knife, Folding Knife, Collectable Knife, Camping Knife...all of those terms are fine.

I have sent knives to the U.S. many times with no problem ever.I have written pocket knife, folding knife, hunting knife,
Never a hitch.
Just go into the post office with your package, tell the person behind the counter where you want to send it,and they will give you a form to fill out
simple and quick.
I just have to remember to bring my reading glasses or it takes me a while.old age is a drag.

USPS to Canada Post or vice versa. Post office. No UPS or FedEx.

Per above posts, use a non threatening term for the contents and you should have no problems. Tactical Zombie Killer XL Blade would be less desireable than Outdoor or Camping Supplies as an example. :)
