I'm trying to touch up my SAK on my coarsest stone, a DMT fine, but dont seem to be making any progress. Its not too dull, it will shave fingernail but has trouble slicing paper easily. Could I not be using enough pressure, or my angle is wrong? Maybe I need a coarser stone or ?

you need to use something like a ceramic stone and finish on leather with micro compound it will turn out like a razor. to shave is an understatment at that point

Oh, I was under the impression that ceramics and stropping were the last steps- to finishing an edge. Are your saying its too SHARP to be doing any good on the diamond? I was thinkng it was too dull to get anywhere without spending hours on it. I know I definitely cant raise a burr on it. Shouldnt I be able to get it reasonably sharp on a coarse medium first?  Other opinions?

You can get an edge to slice paper and even shave with a coarse stone. The main problems are likely angle is off or there is a large burr which needs to be removed.

If you can't raise a burr you might want to increase the angle a bit. Not too obtuse though. 20 degrees on one side is about the most I would go. Try that.

Also you can try the magic marker trick. Mark the bevel with a magic marker and see where you are hitting the edge with the hone.

You can file sak's easily. I would just file a 10 degree bevel on it first. It will then sharpen very quickly at 15 degrees.

you don't need to spend much time on a diamond stone the steel is not that hard. I use spyderco ceramics most of the time only when the edge becomes very dull do i use diamond stones. I like the edge of my knifes polished they stay sharper, are sharper, and cut longer IMO.
