just got this last thursday but wasn't able to go to the woods this weekend. first impression is wow, that handle is super ergonomic! it just melts in the hand. i'm not a big fan of leather but at least spyderco got it right by going with black and ambidextrous too. the plastic inner lining is a nice touch as well...this lefty gives it a big

i'm not really a spyderco fan. that is, i buy knives not because it's made by a particular maker, but when i think it's a well designed knife...it just so happens that spyderco nailed another one outta the park!

i've seen arguments regarding made in taiwan vs. u.s. frequently but this particular one the fit and finish is top notch! the grind is perfectly even on both sides, the scales are seamless, etc. in comparison, the u.s. made knife below it has some minor issues such as uneven ricasso (i just got done grinding it all the way against the scales) and the grind isn't even from heel to tip (that's next i'll fix). this clearly shows the maker's attention to detail trumps blindly dismissing something just because it's made in taiwan :o spyderco's quality control is certainly right up there with the best.

anyway, the bushcraft has some tough competition and it will certainly not be babied. i'll see how it performs against my beloved mora :D

p.s. i'm merely stating quality of u.s. vs. taiwan made knives. i'm locking this thread at the hint of political discussions.

Great knife. I went with RAT cutlery for my bushcraft blades. I don't think the Spyderco model was out at the time... then there was the scale issue.

All that said, If I were choosing again, this one would be high on the list.

Hows the handle material? Looks "slick" but i bet it feels great.

the handle is polished to a really smooth finish but it has that "squeaky" grip to it when my hand is dry. with a little moisture it does feel slippery compared to the textured g10 of the military but i'm guessing the handle's bulges/curves will minimize slipping in actual use. i'll report back when i get to use it in the field.

Nice knife Jay..

Let me know how it performs against your bhk, and even more so against the MORA !!!

take care,

rob

thanks, rob. after fondling it for a few days now, i'm already thinking of asking sal for an orange g10 bushcraft  this is not good for the wallet! not good at all.

Thanks for the pics -- side by side w/the milli is esp helpful.

you're welcome. glad you find it helpful.

It throws sparks like a flamethrower.

yup, the squared off spine is a nice touch. i've been known to be impatient with making my feather sticks fine enough and resorted to showering it with massive sparks instead :o

Hey what's going on, I'm also interested to see how spydies 01 compares to BH o1. My cousin has a BH bushcrafter and he did some serious bushcrafting and that edge held up amazingly.

you can use them and see first hand how they compare. we're hiking in north jersey this saturday morning. you're welcome to join us!

Thanks for the invite but its my last weekend off before I start up the 60 hr work weeks . So the womans got me on lockdown to do ''couple'' things . Hopefully I can get up there next time ,pm me.

My Taiwanese made Spydies are the most perfect of all my knives. They polished the inside of the holes in the liners.

I realy think spyderco has a winner with this one. I for one never thought a company like spyderco would ever produce a "bushcraft knife" but I'm sure glad they did.

Very comfortable handle.

indeed...holds the sharpness too! i've used it hard and i have yet to sharpen it. just a few strop passes here and it's back to shaving sharp again. scandi grind and delicateness is a myth in my experience.

now they need to get into kitchen knives...specifically a chef knife. the shun 10" chef knife with ken onion's handle is the most comfortable i've handled so far. i'd really like to see spyderco take it on!
