Hey guys, just curious which you prefer in a knife you plan on using and having as your trusty companion. Which material do you prefer? Do you prefer it just out of sheer preference, or have you found something about the material in use that makes you prefer it? Thanks guys. :D

I prefer stabilized woods over anything myself ( horn being a close second) for a combo of looks and feel. But between the two ( G10 or micarta) canvas micarta has always felt warmer to me in hand that G10, although the texture or finish has a lot to do with it also.

Micarta by far on a user. Grips much better, feels better in hand, and is also lighter.

G10 does have several advantages over Micarta.

-Resists wear much better which will keep the grip texturing from changing over time.
-Does not readily absorb fluids and oils which will adversely affect grip.
-Seems to be more grippy when dry, even though it becomes slick when wet.

That being said, I still can't really decide which material I prefer for users......

I personally prefer canvas micarta for a user. I was at the last KC show looking for an ASH in .220 to use as a backpacking knife and eventully got my hands on the one I wanted BUT after fondling it for an hour or so I passed on it because I didn't like the way the G10 scales felt( the shelf lines cut into the mags were very sharp and had blister wrote all over them). If they would have been canvas micarta I'd been all over it like stink on poo! Now with that being said I really think it mostly has to do with the way the scales are cut and or shaped. Fine sanded micarta scales can be slicker than G10 but will still feel warmer in the hand. Good luck on your choice

G-10, I have to laugh everytime I see that G-10 gets slick when wet. I work with this stuff at least 2/3rds of a year. Paper, Linen, Canvas Micarta & G-10, G-11. Hands wet from sweat or rain, methanol, electra clean, carburetor cleaner, grease or whatever G-10 won't fail or absorb. As far as being slick when wet, I have held on to it for long periods and to me it begins to have a warming and tacky sensation. I use Micarta as well and like it. I really can't say which is better cause it's a personal thing YOU are just going to have to find out for your self. I have learned to prefer G-10 for a hunting knife cause blood and animal fat doesn't soak into it. You can get an odor that will soak into micarta for a little while. You just have to wash it (micarta) real good when you get home. Of coarse you have to wash G-10 as well, DUH! One thing I do like about micarta is that if your working out in the sun, it doesn't seem to get as warm as G-10 will and that is because it dosen't have the glass mix in the Epoxy Resin oh and notice G-10 is EPOXY Resin while micarta is a PHENOLIC Resin.

As far as natural hand materials, well if you live where it doesn't freeze maybe so. In the north country where freezing is going to be included in daily living often times, Micarta or G-10 and then you will still need gloves! Seen to many broke knife handles and gun stocks that were made from natural materials. Even if I left Alaska and went back south I will use Micarta and G-10 from now on.

I prefer Canvas Micarta over G-10, for me it just feels better in the hand.

6 one way half a dozen the other...

It use to be common to sand the Busse handles if you wanted to soften the grip a little...Guess that's why I prefer the hand shaped handles.

G10 will not get soft or rubbery with extreme heat if it should be used or left by the fire.

I prefer Linen or Canvas Micarta, like everyone say it feels better. I think black paper looks awesome but feels very alien to me. There is some great looking G10 out there but in my hand it feels cheap.

I am a fan of linen micarta.

Tough to beat!

I also like G10 for fish and food work.

Paper micarta feels great in hand.

For big choppers I prefer micarta, linnen then canvas. The canvas feels fine, but the linnen tyoically looks better to my eye.

I wish that Busse would release some bias cut micarta! The natural colored stuff looks like wood.

For sheer copmfort, resC is king!

My order of preference for a user is:
1) Res-C
2) Canvas micarta
3) G10

Okay guys, let me add a curve-ball to this. ;) If I have a SYKCO 911 with the Res-C handle as my main chopper, what do you think would be best on a TGLB as an all-around camping and utility knife? :)

I'd go with G-10. But my reason is not for the above mentioned but for WEIGHT. Due to that one being a LB I would be trying to replace as much weight possible that was removed in the first place from machining.

g10 on the tglb. Like Russ said that little bit of added weight makes a difference. I just like g10 better. It is tougher.

Canvas micarta hands down.

As for toughness-- Both g10 and canvas micarta are overkill on a knife. The rivets would fail before you could damage either.
