Hey everyone, I recently dug up an old double bit axe and found that it has an odd metal cap covering the top of the eye on the axe, can anyone please provide any info on what it could be?

Since nobody's jumping in here, I'll speculate that it is the handle top with an oversized wedge, with crust from being buried so long with the rusty head.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, maybe a cap wedge in one piece and rusted into place. Look into the eye from the other end and see if there's a wedge stub.

yeah I did some electrolosis an after that, pulled it off and its large metal cap wedge, Im not quite sure what time period the axe from though. Im thinking late 1800's.
