I'm designing a capeing knife to go with the skinners I make. I'm not a hunter so I'm looking for suggestions as to blade size and shape. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Tim
Smaller and pointy are the most important aspects I think in a cape knife. I went as far as making it thin and just a tad longer ~3" blade so I can use it for everything instead of having two knives.
Using a blade for capping is hard on the edge. Its the fact that its running along bone that does this. As Weatherman states smaller and pointyier is the ticket with a slight trailing point to slip under the skin at the wrist and along the skull.
A well designed capping knife is a real treat to use. A poorly designed one is the opposite.
KOA has a nice design that I have enjoyed for years. I would like to sharpen about 3/4 " on he top of the tip and increase the handle lengthy and girth by an inch. If you have ever caped an animal out you know the area around the horns and eyes are the most difficult and can require lots of pressure to get a good cut. I will ventually have one made in Elmax with a 2 3/4" blade and 4" handle.
