does anyone have any opinions on the captain? pictures are nice, good or bad I don't care. If someone could get me one of a captain and a civilian so I can compare that would be nice. thank you.

I don't have any photos, nor have I seen it in real life. But I rather like it. It's a very particular blade design though, so if you're looking for a conventional do everything blade shape, this probably isn't it. Great for scraping and chipping though. I think the Captain is a little more expensive than it should be, however.

I have had mine for 2 months and I really love it the blade is more useful for everyday things than you think

I agree with Artfully Martial. I had one for a while but the blade shape wouldn't do everything in the way I wanted it too. Also it's hard to sharpen and the liner lock bothers me. I don't like those things.

Well, if you're right handed, like thick knives with G-10 handles, gimmick grinds, reverse curves, liner locks that require a long thumbnail to release, and have very small hands, then the Captain might suit you.

As for me, I'm left handed, dislike G-10, prefer full flat ground blades with no gimmicks and a straight or simple convex curved edge, favor front locks, and have only moderately small hands, so I couldn't get the "for sale" sign on mine fast enough.

Don't have any photos of it with a Civilian but here are a couple of it with a Ti Delica for size comparison. Suffice to say it's considerably shorter but a good bit thicker than the Civilian.

This should give you some idea of the thickness.

Oh, and am not crazy about open backstraps either, think they let in more garbage than they let out.

On the plus side, it is well finished, and has the typical glassy smooth opening action of a Seki liner lock.

how opinions and taste can vary :) .......

i love G10, love liner-locks. but to me, that blade is like the Tom Brown Tracker of folding spydies.......> bust

i love ss handles, liner locks , combo edges , serrated edges , not a fan of the captain though . i`ll form my true opinion of the tom brown tracker after mine shows up

thank you for your opinions. the pictures from The Deacon were very useful in a size comparison. but I think I'll wait until after christmas to buy anything.

I really don't like anything about the Captain. I think the look is atrocious and the feel in the hand does not work at all for me.

i dont understand the reason of this concept!
You (and thefizz as well) may want to have a look at this thread from when the Captain first came out. A very thorough and detailed review by a fellow forumite, some more opinions, both pro and con, and an explaination by Jason Breeden of the "whys" of his design.

First of all I want to tell you up front that the Captain is very much misunderstood. I have 2 of them and love them dearly. It is not a gimmick knife in my opinion but a really nice slashing machine. It is great for work involving rope or fibrous or tough materials. It is not for everyone as one brother suggested but it has some very interest aspects to it.

I have actually done a couple of kitchen chores with one of mine with great results. The CAPTAIN model deserves a good tryout for sure. But truly check it out for yourself. Long Live the C-111 CAPTAIN model.

There are a few of us that actually use a knife for something other than slicing vegetables, cleaning our cuticles and cutting the tape on boxes.

For those that do get out, the Captain is a great slicer shining as a game and camp knife. The curve on the front of the blade allows considerable control when removing the skin from any game animal and is quite easy to touch up on a bench or field stone freehand. Chocking up on the blade is a dream for intricate scalpel like precision.

The arched recurve on the belly of the blade is great for shaving fuzz sticks for starting a fire, whittling tent stakes; catching and holding thick materials and draw stroking with one or two hands to cut smoothly under control. Opening a heavy carboard box is easy ... push the blade in parallel to the surface 'til the front of the blade clears the surface and catches on the recurve then pull like a hawkbill blade knife (doesn't get much easier!). This area also excels for battoning the blade thru twigs and branches. Sharpening this is easy with the 701 profile hones placed flat on the leather sheath and sharpening the blade freehand like on a bench stone (you can do the same thing laying a SM hone on a good surface and free hand sharpening off the corner).

Happy holidays!

"The more I use you
The more I love you !..."

Ergonomy, high quality, smooth like silk, built like a tank, easy to keep super sharp, a great design and a lot of edge in a clip it...

I wonder why...
The Captain is Nemo's best friends... :D

Happy Holidays

I like mine,,,very well designed blade shape and heavy duty liner lock construction.

I find that mine is becomign more and more useful and it is surprisingly capable whenever I test it. The other day I was trying cleaning a pineapple and with a light slash it cut the top right off through the leaves. I love mine and it's made it's way into my EDC rotation.

I had one and now it is going to JD Spydo. I loved the handle but didn't like the liner lock. I thought it was extremely hard to close the knife and I just couldn't get myself to like the blade but I did LOVE the ergos on the knife. Now I have a big brother for my mini Manix on the way.

Don't fret my friend. It's going to a good home I can assure you. Now I will admit that the Captain is not for everyone. But don't confuse that statement as one of arrogance or anything of the like because I am still learning a lot about this blade shape. I would give a pretty nickel to sit down and talk to Mr. Breeden for just one hour. I think he's expecting us ELUs to find out it's uses by trial and error.

Now I'm not necessarily opposed to learning that way but it would give a guy a head start to get inside the Genius head that concocted this most curious blade design to come by in many moons. I can't wait to see more of Mr. Breeden's anticipated new designs. This guy is getting off to a great start in the knife kingdom. GOD BLess you and yours Mr. Breeden. This is one of the funnest new toys I've had in a while. You and the Great Spyder factory make a hell-of-a TEAM. Don't be shy go ahead and show us your next one
