anyone own a Captain and use it both in the city and in the woods? i'm in the market for several (yea a serious addiction) new knives this week, and am interested in the Captain. Particularly interested in how both cutting edges work for you, and what things you have used it for.

I know there were a few threads in the Spyderco forum here when it first came out, including input from the designer. I just couldn't get into the Captain myself, but I haven't handled one, either, so I haven't written it off yet! :D

I've been interested in a new knife that Al Mar is coming out with called the Payara. It's built on the same handle as their Shrike and the blade has a long drawn out resemblance to the Captain, but it's less idiosyncratic. It should hit the market soon; it's in the pre-order stage.

I could laugh at you for a statement like that ... but not if I look back at what I bought this month, knives and gear, and three more deliveries on the way in the next few days.

ha ha ha ha ha ... we're doomed.

thanks s for the link, ii looked at that Payara, but it just does'nt catch my fancy, so to speak. I really like the handle on the Captain, and the unique blade (yes i'm pretty much sold on it.....just curious to see what others ahve used it for....

I got one for a song on the For Sale forums, so I'm already predisposed to like it. I love the way it looks and it fits my hand pretty well. Some have complained about the lock being hard to get to, but I don't have a problem.

It will cut whatever you want and the VG-10 performs like a champ. However, most of my cutting needs at work are far better served by my Paramilitary. I work at a big box home improvement store, so I open boxes, cut rope, twine, bands, etc, all day long. The Captain just doesn't do those tasks very well for me. I still like it, though.

thanks all! i been thru the links too, pretty informative.

4 days away form getting one!

I've owned a couple and still own one.Things I really like: 1.) Handle is big enough to hang on to - you can actually put some muscle into the blade - something that a lot of 3" folders can't manage because of cute slipery handles.2.) Blade can take some pryin - makes it more of a general use instrument.3.) VG-10 - this is a very good steel! Spyderco knows how to make this work and work well.
What I don't like : 1.) The clip is in the way - try cuttin some stuff without it and you'll send Vadim a e-mail at Vess Leather works. Minus the clip this is a very comfortable repetitve cutter - but it's asking a lot of a 3" blade knife to get the clip out of the way - unless you outright remove it. For whatever reason - a couple of us have found that it's more comfortable cutting with the clip set up for tip down carry.2.) The tip geometry has strengths ( tip strength) - but if you have to make gouging cuts with the tip - well that's not it's strength.
This is a very useful tool.
