I’m considering buying a Fontenille Pataud Knife with some Father’s Day gift money, but I can’t decide between the Capuchadou or the Le Thiers (10cm or 11cm). Both are excellent, but I thought some knife nut commentary from the Porch Dwellers might help me to decide. What do y’all think?

I'm getting one for my birthday! Love both, but I'm going with the Thiers knife first. Leaning towards the 10 cm because it's more pocket friendly. The larger (Nature) is 11.5 cm (about 4 1/2 in.). I have a 12 cm Laguiole I love, but it is big in the pocket. For me, 10 cm is a good compromise. But I will probably pick up a Capuchadou myself later. Incidentally, I have a wonderful 9.5 cm Thiers knife which I love. The Fontenille Pataud will be just a little larger and has a locking mechanism. I may get a number of Le Thiers knives before I'm done, they are so sleek and elegant and beautiful. And useful!

I voted other. Suggest a Chamois 10cm which is a variant of the Capuchadou but it has a Spear blade and a very cool Chamois head stamp on the blade:cool: 10cm 4" is enough knife for my pocket so it's a bit more compact too.

Don't like le Thiers so much, it's that protrusion at the back that spoils it and although FP are top quality, I think Chambriard makes a better looking, sleeker and cheaper version

Tough choice!! I give the Capuchadou a slight edge! I have both, and I like the extra bit of skill it must take to finish one!! I also like them in hand!!View attachment 1359228 View attachment 1359229 View attachment 1359230 View attachment 1359231
Those are lovely examples, Charlie! Thanks for the recommendation.

Nice! I had a Le Thiers once and really liked it—it was a liner lock but had an extended tang like a friction folder. I look forward to seeing yours.

Thanks for making the choice harder, sheesh. I’ve eyed that Chamois, too, but it would cost me more because the US dealer of FP don’t carry it in stock. I like a spear point, but something about that curvy handle begs for that long clip angle to me. But the spear would be more useful. . .

Decisions, decisions.

You can order direct from FP they ship worldwide and are efficient, the French Poste seems to be delivering stuff abroad OK now (to Europe anyway) so you might want to go to the horse's mouth ;)

Spear rides better in the frame too, but I'm totally biased in favour of Spear over Clip :D

They are shipping and have a free box when you buy a knife deal going on. They also have more cover options, although I don’t think I can see the exact knife if I order from them (the US dealer has pics of each knife)

No not had one in person but been brooding about it, wide yes but pinchable;)

I don’t mind wide, though I sometimes carry two knives in the same pocket. Not sure if that would work with this beauty.

I see the appeal, Will!! Nice; it also doesn't need a nail pull!!
I hope you get one so we can see other views!!:D

Your concern is a valid one. I used to have a spearpoint #72, and I moved it on quickly once I dropped it in my pocket. Just too wide to carry comfortably.
I had one of those for a bit and found it uninspiring, but it doesn’t have some of the sexier features of the French folders. Still, I think I’m leaning toward the Capuchadou at the moment. That could change. It’s a choice between good and good in any comparison.

Here is the Thiers knife I have by Chambriard, a gift from @timberweasel. Just took the pic so you could see the size in relation to a (large?) hand:

About the size of a stockman. The small FP version is just slightly larger. My favorite knife had been a Laguiole, but when I received this, it instantly became my new favorite. I had already been planning to get one for my birthday in October. Right now, if there are any patterns I am interested in collecting--or accumulating--they are Le Thiers, Laguiole, and stockman. If any themes beside patterns, maybe French folders and Case knives.

I love the spear too, but prefer the clip. Le Thiers has almost a straight back, and not really a clip, but just about as beautiful and useful. We all have different tastes! :)
We need more pics in this thread, Guys!! Let's see 'em!!:D
See above, Charlie!
I've long had my eye on an FP knife, but not a Capuchadou, Laguiole, or Le Thiers. The one I'd get before any other is a Corsican Vendetta.
I love the Vendetta too. I want some of each! :p:D:cool::thumbsup:
