Hi, everyone this is my first post. I have been making knives for about 10 years as a hobby and have made to date about 75 blades. Both by forging and by stock removal.

I recently made a axe head out of a piece of car axle and was wondering if anyone knew what these axles are made of?

Photos? Tease us with a great first post and then leave us without a photo. Excrutiatingly painful!

A few years back I saw a show on making a Kentucky long rifle. They had the most amazing maple stock. What you do is take nitric acid mixed 1 to 1 with water and dissolve a small quantity of iron shavings in it. Then you rub your handle wood with it. The more you put on the darker it gets. Takes some practice to get it right. Then they said to rub in several coats of linseed oil. I went for some polyurethane instead to make it a little tougher. However I think that the linseed oil looks better. The finish makes the wood appear almost transparent. It will probably work on other wood as well. If you want a less red look then don't put in the iron. The acid will still darken the wood but it wont be so red.

Thanks for the photo bucket tip.
