Car Camping Knife Kit/Storage? Glamping

True it's not a chef's knife ... but for food prep for me ... it's hard to beat a Mora in Sandvik 12c27 ... and comes in the hard modeled sheath ... lightweight packs away easy and safely in the sheath.

Thank you so much guys! I may post a picture of my camping setup when done. I've got an inexpensive but effective setup and may invest in a nicer one later on. This one will get the job done and cheap enough I don't have to be paranoid about things growing legs and walking away at festivals. You guys have been a huge help!

i blame sammo hung for my obsession
with oriental kitchen knives

turns up uninvited ;-)

and more amazingly hardship and necessity
prooves that only a single knife is all that is
required in highly capable asian hands.

Some of those guys really know how to utilize a machete in unique ways, that is all they have and they use it for everything. Not that I am saying we need to take a machete for glamping.......weird looks you know. Ana a machete may be overkill opening a package of hot dogs. :D

My travel kit food prep knives all have individual plastic sheaths. You can throw them in any bag or luggage without worry.

2 dexter Russell fillet knives (7" and 8")
1 cold steel roach belly
1 cold steel Canadian belt knife
1 dexter Russell 3.5" serrated net knife.

I can do amazing things with these and could even break down a moose or bluefin tuna!

Super cheap set too! If I were a bachelor, I would like to have these exclusively in my kitchen for daily use! :D

You only need a couple knives car camping in addition to your regular woods knives. I would go with one larger knife and two paring knives. All you need. Glamping... a bit different as you can essentially take the "kitchen sink" with you, and in fact you may have a kitchen sink. The sky is the limit.

Glamping? Where the hell have I been? I wasn't familiar with the term and googled it. Think I need to do some glamping as I keep finding excuses not to go camping, tent or car camping.... it's a comfort thing. Sell the house and buy a glamp mobile.

I have used a 7" Dexter Russell fillet knife, which is only semi-flexible for all food prep for weeks at a time, previously.

It's thin and an awesome slicer, obviously great for fish and the tip is narrow like a paring knife and I've used it a ton for coring green peppers for ceviche and dicing veg.

Just have to be a bit more careful because it's longer than any other paring knife you've ever used.

Now, I travel with a slap-chop type of thing from Pampered Chef, to dice up veg (peppers, red onion, cilantro, etc) for ceviche. Saves the knife and time!:D:thumbsup:

Being that my wife is a meat cutter, I find the Dexter Russel's and Vic's to be great kitchen/prep knives on the cheap. However I always take a decent 5-7" Santoku with me camping, makes prepping a breeze and doesn't take up much room. That and a nice folder are all you need. I have a couple smaller old cleavers I pull put once in a while to prep just for giggles, you can do it all with one but they aren't the best slicers, bread cutters or peelers, I've never taken one camping.

I have a couple of RADA aluminum handles knives, want to use them but have not too much, any one else use a RADA for a kitchen knife? I just need to practice my sharpening skills which are not too good.

Hi everyone, first time post here. Glad I found a thread I actually have some experience with. My setup consists of an Old Hickory Hop Knife for main food prep and an AG Russell Woodswalker as the paring knife. You can make a cheap sheath from vinyl or plastic sheeting and brass eyelets. For bbq or huge meals I'd add a cane machete as a cleaver/meathook/ spatula.

Sounds like your knife combination should work well based on my car camping experience. Old Hickory's work well and are easy to sharpen if they need it. Welcome to the forum by the way and feel free to express your opinions, preferences, and things you have learned here.

I seldom really do much actual cooking car camping. The max might be peeling some potatoes and slicing them. For me, a stout paring knife or a slightly large paring knife is about all I really need and can always fall back on whatever knives I bring along for fun or use in the woods/campsite. As always, SAKs do a lot of my cutting.
