I am curious if I am getting the correct rate here, and if there is a way of checking that.

I have State Farm, and I live in Sparks, NV (adjacent to Reno, NV) and I drive a '97 Honda Civic.

Anyway, here are the numbers for 6 months:

A Liability Bodily Injury 100,000/300,000 Property Damage 100,000 147.98

C Medical Payments 5,000 26.76

D 500 Deductible Comprehensive 22.08

H Emergency Road Service 3.10

U Uninsured Motor Vehicle Bodily Injury 100,000/300,000 86.76

For a total of 286.68

The part that bugs me is that I used to pay 204.09 to the same company, for the same thing, in a different state. Why so drastic of a jump in price?

PS they also list these reductions

Multiple line 21.87
Vehicle Safety 12.60
Accident-Free 58.23

Thanks.

Your zip code can be one of the most important factors for car insurance rates.

I wonder if your credit rating or other statistics could have been affected by your move? Do you go from being a home owner to a renter, for example?

Also, around here anyway, State Farm is not known for being an inexpensive insurance company. It pays to shop around.

Good Luck!

I also wonder if all of that insurance is necessary? I have a '95 F150 that's depreciated practically to $0 on account of mileage and condition and I only carry the legal minimum for insurance. I think it comes to about $150/year.

So I can get the same thing for less from a different company?

What are some companies to consider?

WOW! Can I trade rates with you I pay about 600 for 6 months 1200/year.

Allstate, Geico...open the phone book and start dialing.

As Bob W said, it could be your zipcode. You now live in a fast state with fast women and fast players and long fast highways.

If you lived up here in cow country, like I do, it might be cheaper. :D

Haa... different states? And you really wonder why it's so different? Imagine gun laws. Now imagine something that most people use everyday. Different regulatory environments, different laws = different premiums. Don't live in nevada, but sounds good to me. Shop around. Call all the different companies you can find, cover the price (white out, tape over), and send your dec page (fax/email) to them and ask if they can beat. Look for any fine print exclusions to make sure they are apples to apples. Insurance companies are hungry. Buyer's market. Best of luck.

Call Geico, Allstate, Progressive, Farm Bureau, and 21st Century and give them that info and see if they will beat that price. You can also check Metlife too. I have their dental insurance and get fliers from them all the time about car insurance. I routinely check on my car insurance and State Farm has the best rates for me too. I also have renters insurance from them too. Multiples policies with the same Co saves ya some bucks too.

I have no clue if einsurance or thegeneral are any good.

I recently moved states, and my motorcycle insurance halved (same company). Car insurance went down, too, moving to State Farm.

Location is the most important thing.

The post office changed my zip code a few years ago. Same house, etc. Car insurance went down, house insurance went up. It was almost a wash.

The basic information is accurate, states with less traffic and less people have cheaper insurance. But there are other factors as well that could affect the state-by-state rankings, for instance theft rates, number of younger drivers, better designed roads...

As far as using that data and applying it to the insurance rate of a particular person... probably not useful at all considering the roll of personal statistics in determining rates and extreme variations in pricing within different areas of the same state.

So I can get the same thing for less from a different company?
Uh, yeah. Just like any other consumer item.

What are some companies to consider?
I'm not sure who we have offhand, perhaps Progressive. We use an independent agent who does business with many different insurance companies. Periodically we visit with the agent and make sure we're still getting a fair price.

I have both ends of the spectrum. At the high end, full coverage on the Honda S2000 convertible is almost $100/month. :thumbdn:
At the low end, liability only for the '04 Volusia is $35/year.

286.68 for six months? I wouldn't complain.

I've been driving since 1997, never had an accident or a ticket, and I pay close to $1200/year for my '06 Impreza.

find a good independent insurance agent (one that writes for more than one company) and let them know everything you want insured (home, apt., cars etc.). Then let them sort it out & "shop" if for you. Also if crap happens and you need or think you need to make a claim you only have one call to make.
I hate State Farm with a passion but I won't hijack this thread with it.
Progressive should also be added to that list if you are going to shop it yourself. My Agent beat their online price by a few bucks a year.

Progressive SUCKS. I almost had to get a lawyer to sue them to cove my wreck that was not my fault. It was the other person fault but they had a suspended licensed and it was there friend’s car with there insurance. I get in another wreck and it is not my fault with somebody that has there insurance I will sue the hell out of them just for having there insurance. Auto owners beat there price and rasie my limits of coverage too.

USAA? I know several people who sing their praises. I think it is for military, ex-military. The guy I know did 2 years in the army in the 60's and he and his kids have been with USAA since.... Pls correct me anyone if I got this only partly right.

USAA is for veterans and children of veterans.
american family is another good company for competitive rates and decent service.

..well, if it's only going to be 10, 15, 30 bucks cheaper, not sure it's worth the effort of switching. I have been with State Farm for years, and never had problems with them, knock on wood. We all want to save money (which is why our manufacturing jobs are disappearing, but that's another topic), but what does the money buy us is another question.

P.S. I bet it's the visiting Californians that are driving up the auto insurance rates here. We didn't have those in TN.

That's right - I've been there for 45 years. Kids are there too. Credits for membership via subscriber saving accounts. (member owned company)
