Hi there,

I'm trying to equip a new car with a driver self-rescue kit -- something to cut seat belts with and also a window punch.

I've heard some of you on the forums recommend an automatic centre punch [ACP] as a good choice to break some of the new tampered glass windows. I have two questions with respect to those.
a) are all ACPs made the same? If not, are there any that are particularly suitable?
b) how do you adjust the tension on ACPs?

I'd welcome recommendations/suggestions as to other useful tools etc that could go in this kind of kit.

Also, I'd like to hear how you mount these tools safely in the vehicle so that they can be accessed easily and not be a liability in a crash.

Thanks. My previous cars have had manual windows but they are getting more and more rare!

Any ACP is suitable if it's there and you need it.

The bigger difference is whether it's spring fired or fixed. Will the recocking be easy hanging upside down in a car filling with water, or would you prefer to keep banging on the glass with the fixed until the glass shatters?

You may want to find out how much impact is required to actually do the job, but smashing glass isn't cheap.

I would personally recommend the Stanly FUBAR - you can subdue hysterical passengers, extract yourself and them, and impress the cell phone talking blonde in the SUV who forced you off the road.

Using it on her windshield . . .

This is a joke, intended as humor. Misuse of tools as weapons may or may not constitute a felony in your jurisdiction. Consult with authorities concerning the legality of all acts of revenge. Ask to borrow the officers FUBAR out of his trunk.

The rescue-me is great, I have them one attached to each cars rearview mirror so that driver or passenger can reach it!
It is a great no frills tool, it is the only spring loaded punch I would trust because it is covered and no chance of getting crap in it if hanging. ACPs springs rust like a bugger and and they come apart from vibration .

Just my opinion ,firefighter for 12yrs:D

Stay safe

Spring-loaded all the way. If underwater, trapped where you can;t really get in a good swing, or otherwise disabled, the spring-loaded ones are the only way to go.

Just chunk the FUBAR in that silly slot on the face of the radio. It'll be right where you need it.

I would recommend a pair of EMT shears for seat belt cutting. I haven't seen anything thats works better, safer, or is more reliable for that job. I have cut lots of belts and race harnesses with them and they are cheap. I like the the little Rescue Me tools also though and the glass breaker is a very good idea.

Thanks for the Posts on this thread. I have never really considered this.

I will be buying a Rescume for my wifes car and my own.

Good info!!!!

I keep a Blackjack Campanion in one of the door pockets... it should do to pry or cut open anything short of a tank.

Sorry but nothing you can fit in a door pocket will pry a door of even the smallest car. Hell 4 foot bars don't beat the Nader pin, which is why we carry hydraulic tools.
