I recently decided to have a stereo system installed in my 02 Dodge x-cab pickup.
I started with a nice Pioneer premier receiver that worked great and had a ton of features but seemed cheaply made and had more features than I needed.
So I have tried out a couple new Alpines. I now have the 9886 receiver, alpine 300 amp, with Polk audio 6x9's in the front door with Polk 5 1/4's and seperate tweeters in the rear doors.

I've had Alpines in the past and they have been great, but just can't warm up to the new stuff.
So I'm thinking of going with another older Alpine or possibly a Nakamichi.
The Nak's seem to get great reviews and am wondering if anyone else has used the in-dash Naks, and what you thought of them, especially compared to the older Alpines 7800/7900 series ...

I used to have 9886 for a head unit but it sounded a little dull, so I exchanged it for 9887 and tuned it with KTX-100EQ and now it sounds great.

I thought about doing the imprint with this one but I've come to the realization that I really like the older Alpines. Back when they still had the green display lights.
I know what you mean about it sounding dull. I know what the Polk speakers sounded like with my other head unit and I can't get it anywhere close with the 86.
I just picked up a 7840 today and can't wait to get it hooked up. From all the reviews I have read, it is one of the few older models that got excellent reviews in all areas.
Doesn't look quite as flashy as the 86's and 87's but thats o.k

I installed car audio for for a few years and kenwood was always the perfered choice of head units.
