Hey guys im considering either the meadowlark or the cara cara both in FRN.
It be reallly cool if you guys could give me your personal advice in my following criteria:

-to be edc in a suburban enviroment
-is decent for a camping trip
-a good all around knife
-your own personal experiance.

Thanks guys!

I have both knives in g10. If you haven't seen one in person, the Cara Cara is a huge knife...or so it seems to me. I prefer smaller folders for urban carry. I bought the Cara Cara but it's never left the house in my pocket. Just too big for me. As far as urban EDC, I really prefer the Robin over the Meadowlark. The Cara Cara will definitely make a good woods knife. I carry my Meadowlark often when I go to the woods. Just get all three! I love the Byrd knives!

I don't understand.

Didn't you ask pretty much the same question a couple weeks ago?

Here's my response from that thread:

I still stand behind my previous recomendation. Since some people prefer smaller blades, here are my thoughts in that area as well.

When I first started carrying a knife, I read a lot of stories about how some jurisdictions placed a 3-inch restriction, and how 3-inches is all that is needed, and how more than 3-inches makes the knife awkward, etc… I kept all these thoughts in mind when I went looking for my first carry knife. I soon discovered that there weren’t a whole lot to choose from in a three-inch folder with a pocket clip, and the ones I could discover were either too expensive for me, or just didn’t appeal to me (many of the knives with a blade of three-inches or less had ridiculously small handles). I found that a lot of folders were in the 3 1/8” to 3 ½” range (blade length), so I ended up with a Kershaw Whirlwind (3 3/8“ blade). I carried this knife, or something along the same length for a few years (eventually settled on a Native III{3-inches}), untill I read that local law had no length restriction on knives that were carried for utility use. Upon learning this I thought, “Well gee! If I can carry a longer folder, why not give it a try?”, and bought a Endura 3 with a four-inch blade. My initial apprehension of the size of the knife were erased within a week of carrying and using the knife. The noticeable size difference in my pocket was negligible, and I quickly found that I preferred the longer blade as it required less sharpening than a shorter blade. I also realized that my fears of the added length making the blade awkward and unwieldy, were unfounded and unnecessary. As a result of this, I now prefer a longer blade, but I also carry a Subcom for smaller cutting tasks (as well as not to offend the sensibilities of NKP).

That’s my personal preference. I’ve since owned two variations of the Meadowlark (sold both as its too small for my preference), and a Cara Cara (rides in my EDC bag always as backup knife). I personally prefer the Cara Cara because of it’s greater size. You’ve got roughly four-inches of blade as opposed to three-inches of blade. Which do you think is going to last longer, doing the same work, all other things being equal?

That said, you have to decide what’s going to work best for you. Some people like having a bigger knife, while others prefer something a little more compact. I submit that you’ll never know which one is going to fit you, and your needs better until you try both. Fortunately, the Cara Cara/Meadowlark is a great way to conduct such an experiment since they are essentially the same knife in two different sizes (they are also cheaper than many others). Truth is, you could easily buy a Meadowlark, and find it to be too small, or you could buy a Cara Cara and find it to be too big. Or, you could buy either, and love it, all the while not realizing that the other knife is a better match for you and your needs:D.

Do you have any shows/shops where you could look at both knives (doesn’t matter handle material to look), or even compare the Endura/Delica (similar in size and shape to the byrds)? Both will work great for your intended uses. The Cara Cara would work better, but only if it suites you better, and if it is practical (jurisdiction, laws, other peoples sensibilities, etc…). You can get some great advice from people on the Internet, but the only way you’ll know for sure is if you buy both and use them.

This is how many of us accumulate collections of knives. We go through knife after knife trying to discover which one is going to be our “be-all/end-all”, and in the process accumulate more that we ever anticipated.

Just today I rotated my Cara Cara back into my EDC routine. Yes, it is a BIG folder, but it is slim, and the FRN is light, so no biggie to me. My 8yr. old has a Meadowlark, and wife has a Robin, and I would be pleased with any of them for casual pocket carry. I would prefer my Cara Cara for woods carry though. I also recommend dropping the angle on the Cara Cara a bit, it really helps, and the Byrd steel handles it just fine. It also responds very well to stropping. Heck, for less than $65 you can have all 3 and be well satisfied.
