I made a file guide to help with my plunge lines now just waiting for the carbide blanks. What type of adhesive or epoxy can hold up to the heat of a grinder? Thanks for the help.

Not sure on file guides but in the machine shop we used high temp silver to braze the carbide to the steel body's. Worked like a champ.

Probably you won't have problems with good epoxy, but do your best to fix them square to your guide, either if using epoxy or brazing

Did you have them cut a 6" piece in half or something? Or did you do it yourself? How do you cut it? Also, is it possible to true them up using a surface grinder?

I plan on cutting mine with a diamond saw blade on my mini grinder. But you know what they say about plans!! I bought a extra piece just in case something goes wrong I don't want to repay the shipping.

I used 1/8 x 3/8 x 6 strips. Scared them with a diamond grinder blade I had laying around for gutting granite, then snapped it in a vise. The ends weren't perfect but that is not important unless you're trying to sell a product. Good enough for personal use.

I made the guide fixture from 1/2 x 1/2 mild steel. Stainless would be better as dunking your blade to cool it when grinding will create corrosion. I make sure to clean mine and oil it after each use, and store them with oil on them.

Once I had all the holes drilled, tapped and guide pins installed I lapped the face on my surface plate so it was perfectly flat. To glue the strips to the guide fixture I used a couple small drops of CA glue to glue them to a 123 block with an extra piece of carbide strip between the 2 strips so it looked like a T on the 123 block. I then applied JB weld to the 2 strips after the CA was cured and set the guide fixture on it and tightened the bolts on the fixture to the strip in the middle ensuring everything was as square as possible and let it sit for 24 hrs. Then removed it from the 123 block and the center piece of strip I used and was done....

Marc, Thanks for the info and dwg to show how you made the file guide. I like that - think I'll make me one. I've been using the clamp from my bubble jig, which works just fine. BUT - I enjoy making tools also {g}

I like making tools as well. I couldn't afford the price for an already made one, so sources out the parts and figured I could make one. Even with the counter bore drill bit I think I have less than $50 in 2 guides.

Well, it's not "cheap" at $38 shipped for two 6" strips of 1/8"X3/8" carbide, but it's ordered.

Thanks for the link and dwg.
