Carbide for lanyard bead?

I have used those same inserts in place of flint for traditional flint and steel fire lighting.... they work well.

Ditto, never mind that they add aesthetics and personalization to a blade that im going to be spending years of my life with. As that tiny bead can add a boost to morale You must believe the psychological aspect of survival to be negligible :barf:

Umm... I can only speculate as I have never been in a survival situation nor have I had a useless bauble dangling from my knife, but I would expect that if I were in a serious survival situation and having a hard time of it I would probably be pissed that I didn't have enough sense to hang something USEFUL from my knife instead of an insignificant piece of jewelry that reminds me of DEATH!

And sorry, but if your morale is dependant upon a tiny piece of skull-shaped pewter, you're probably screwed.

As for me, the effect of such a pointless bauble on my morale would certainly be considered "negligible."

Josh had the posting of a sinker however I have also used colored wooden beads as a small bobber when fishing and they work pretty well.

a small square ceramic "bead" would probably do for a emergency touch up

Excellent ideas.
Now this is the mindset I'm looking for. :D

It almost seems the lanyard has devolved into a vestigial decoration. Occasionally a status symbol (a Strider isn't complete without a Starlingear bead!:p) for the tacticool crowd.

Part of me wants to bring function back to it, especially if additional utility can be added (though a useful "bead", for instance, but who knows what else?).

The other part of me doesn't really like things dangling off of my folders...

if a person were able to combine some function, w/ a little decorative appeal- you'd probably have a winner :)

I have lanyards on all my big knives. Just a length of paracord long enough to loop around my wrist with a cord lock to tighten it. This way if I am chopping there is no chance of it flying out of my hand. But on a folder? Probably not.

I have some small plastic glow in the dark skull beads. I guess they might be useful for finding the knife in the dark.

I'm not sure i would want something that hard and pointy swinging off the handle of my knife. I have a retention lanyard on my BK9 with a plastic cord lock on it. If i forget to put in around my wrist it tends to hit my hand/wrist hard enough to sting...and that's just plastic and paracord.

I've tried lanyards on a lot of knives. I think the only one I have one on now is my Salt knives, as they are always in the water. Any knife I have is eventually going to gut, dress or fillet something, and the lanyards always get nasty. Someone on here made some beads from fatwood, I thought that was i clever idea. What about some beads or such made of magnesium?

I'm not into lanyards at all. The only knife I own that might have one in a Shadow IV and I just got it.
What I have been considering for a bauble of sorts is a short piece of magnesium rod with a torch striker tip on the end. Maybe machine a 1/4" or slightly bigger dia. rod down and thread it to accept the replacement striker flints. I was thinking of attachment to a SAK and being able to scrape the mag and strike with the nail file. I just don't like having stuff flopping around while using the knife either. Another thought I had was to attach this little piece of mind with one of those disconnecting key rings so it would be easier to separate them for "normal" use.
