Can you purchase strips of carbide steel, say 1/2" W X 5"L x 1/8" Thick?
If so where?
What would they cost?
What I was thinking that if you could purchase such strips you could epoxy them to the side of a filing guide and have a surface that you could run against a grinder, a file or pretty much anything and have little, too no wear. This should be cheaper than an all carbide filing guide!
Any thoughts on this idea?

Yes you can. We use a lot of it at work to make saws. I have also been thinking of making some like this. But i would braze the carbide on to the steel. I will check where we get it from for you.

Got mine from MSC. Used the following to adhere... Works great and can put up with heat of using a grinder against it.

Loctite® 325™ Speedbonder™ Structural Adhesive, High Temperature is a high temperature, two-step, no mixing required transparent brown adhesive. Loctite 325 is solvent resistant and, when used in conjunction with Loctite® Primer 7075™, forms flexible bonds on gaps up to 0.40". Designed for severe environments and temperatures to 350°F, Loctite 325 fixtures in 5 minutes

Here's another option. I haven't got them yet but they do have a variety of sizes. I went to order them and they have a minimum purchase of $25 so I held off and haven't got back to it yet.

Josh, what are you kidding, all I got to is start an order, and it's over $25.00 the first key stroke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
So I guess my idea was not so dumb it is just a matter of finding the right size carbide strips, at the right price.

Eric, thanks for the heads up on the adhesive. This is beggining to look more like a do-able project all the time. If I can get the carbide for a reasonablel price that is!

Carbide strips for the file guide is a great idea I will try soon. Could carbide plate be used for platens? Like the glass most of us use?
