carbon blades

I've been using Nu Finish automotive polish (Orange plastic bottle) on Randall knives for many years and I store them in their sheaths. This stuff is long lasting and tough, it seems it has to be abraded off to get to bare metal. My knives are users, so this isn't just a storage protection. And now my much newer Barkies get the same coating treatment so they can survive living in leather sheaths in my backpack.

I Live Near The Tx Coast. Salt Air Is A Diffinite Problem In This Area. I Wear An H&k Usp Pistol. I Have To Watch It's Barrel And Sights Which Will Rust If Not Taken Care Of Because Of The High Salt Content In The Air. Knives Are The Same. Rust Is Definitely A Problem In This Area. I Use My Knife For Everything From Bar B Que To Cutting Limes For My Beer.

You do have a very specific problem here, one that I doubt stainless steel, even the soft 410 or 420 alloys, would fully solve. I'd suggest you do for the knife exactly what you do for the pistol. The knife's patina will work like your pistol's blueing.

At a guess, you're using one of those preservatives that goes on as a thin liquid. You can smell it as it dries to become like a wax or heavy grease. I don't know of anything that works any better. I wouldn't want to get the stuff on my food, though.

I use BreakFree CLP on my guns, but this stuff smells and I wouldn't want it near my food. Any suggestions?

Just something you wouldn't mind ingesting, like mineral oil laxative from the health and beauty aids department at the local Walmart. A thin coat will seal the surface of the blade, and such a tiny amount won't come anywhere close to giving you the drizzles. Very safe. I'd stay away from salad oil, though. It will get rancid.

TC-11 is a penetrating anti rust compound http://www.tc-11.com/ if you have a mildly polished finish (mothers mag on a sponge on top of the already matte finish) and some TC-11 on your Carbon steel knife (mine is a D2 710) you will not have any rust problems if you wipe your knife down after wet use.

Vaseline works very safely. ibolite is dead right. Also that paraffin wax that cooks use for canning. You can probably find it in blocks nearby where they sell Mason jars.

Outstanding ibolit i have never heard of vasoline used on knives. Thanks for the advise.
