Carbon date my Kabar Please!

Moose, thanks a million. If there is anything you need to know about heavy duty mobile mining equipment, I'll be glad to help out. I just couldn't find out enough info on this to please myself. If you owned this knife would you take it out and use it? Just some basic woods use, light batoning.

Thanks for the info,

No, I wouldn't. That sounds strange coming from me, but I wouldn't.

I found a few OLD, OLD Kabars at local gunshop, tried to talk the old guy runnin' the place to sell me some, but he just kept saying no. Finding older Kabars in that good of condition is kinda hard to do, I would keep it as you found it, and buy you a new one to use. They don't cost much, and the history housed in that knife, doesn't need to be taken out. Just kept. Or at least thats my thoughts on it.

Being a mechanic for a living i know sorta what to expect out of steel. I have seen some poor technique which results in metal fatigue and finally failure. I understand what you are saying about doing it right. I think it will be nice to
finally get this knife out and revive some life into it. I won't treat it like I do my BK2.

Is neatsfoot oil suitable and advised to put on the leather stacked handle? It still seems to have a good polish on it.

Roger that I was typing while you put the last post up. I have a newer kabar fighting knife with the rubber handle and
the D2 steel. I'll just keep this old one and take it out to let my mind daydream. I may also pick up just a new good old normal kabar to play with.

I would look at something to seal the leather with, instead of treat it. Bee's was based would be my go to on that one.

Thanks guys, picked up a new Kabar USN knife today. I now have my old WW2 Kabar, my D2 Extreme Kabar with Eagle Industries sheath that I've owned for 8 or 9 years. Now I have a new 1095 Kabar knife to go play with. Man do I love knives!!!!

I can leave my WW2 Kabar to watch over the other knives, guns, and my better flyrods in the safe.

Good to hear. I been looking at those D2 1281 for a while now, I think I might have to get one. :D

Moose, my Kabar dealer tells a story of someone clamping a 1095 kabar in a vise, then taking the D2 Extreme Kabar and basically baton thru the 1095 with the help of a sledge. Doubt it's true, but a fun story. Had you ever heard that story?

I believe I read, that the D2 Extreme was the first ever "production" D2 fixed blade. That alone makes it a reason to get one.

Have a good one,
Red,

I haven't heard one yet.

I'll believe it when I see it. :D

Not calling you or the stories origins a lie, but we've seen other knives go edge to edge before, and so far, just messed up blades. :D

It very well could be the first production D2 knife, I'm afraid I just don't know, worth looking into.

redmech,

DerekH has it correct.

You have a late model KA-BAR USN Mark II. You can tell by the thin washer that is cross pinned on the side instead of threaded and peened on the butt end. The guard has the KA-BAR stamp as opposed to the ricasso. These changes were done in 1944-45 toward the end of the war. It depends on what you consider valuable but I would put it away for safe keeping. WWII USN MKIIs and USMC F/Us from the WWII era are becoming rare and commanding some good prices.
Just my 2 cents.

That is a knife by Matt Lesniewski, of ML Knives. It's the Bush and Hunter I believe. You can find him if you google ML Knives. He makes a great knife 1095 convex edge kind of a traditional look. I sure do like it. He is great to deal with.

Thanks, Ross
