Any help in explaining (pics might help) the different variations of Cabon fiber as used by Spyderco.
I have a CF Police(nice & glossy) .
BTW My first cf Spyderco.
What's on the Cf Harpy?
& what other types can be found?
any help appreciated.
regards,Rick.

Also anyone know where i might find any other CF Spyderco models?
If so my e-mail address is:scarysharpblade@yahoo.ca
If i am out of line asking this here, please let me know. NO harm meant .

The CF harpy is a smooth, glossy finish.

They also seem to have a smooth matte finish, like on the Caly 3 CF.

And a rougher CF like on the Military CF BG42.

Those are the ones I have and know.

Earliest use was on the Swiss made C22 Walker, and the earliest ones of those had a matte finish, which was changed to glossy sometime later....

Both of those used CF of the type used on McLaren(?) F-1 cars.

Then came the glossy CF series made in Seki Ladybug - Cricket - Dragonfly - Delica - Police - Civilian, and then, much later the glossy CF Harpy.

Then came the two peel-ply CF Military Sprint Runs in S30V and BG-42.

Then came the, for want of a better term, "nubby" CF on the T-Mag. Sort of a lumpy feel with a matte finish.

Latest one out is semi-matte on the Caly 3. I say semi because it has considerably more of a sheen to it than the stuff on the original Walkers.

There were also a few protos that never made it to production, several in the Seki series, and a Native.

Spyderco is currently using 2 types of Carbon Fiber for their knife handles. There is the shinny glossy type like that was used on the Police, Delica and Harpy and there is also the Peel Ply ( the rough/matte type) and it has been used on the CF Military.

Now that Michael Walker that Deacon showed in his picture is also a rough/matte type of Carbon Fiber but I'm not sure if it is also the Peel Ply. If my memory serves me well I believe that CF Michael Walker was made over in Switzerland. I have no idea what they used but it is at least similar to the Peel Ply CF.

I personally don't see a great deal of advantage in the Peel Ply Carbon Fiber other than looks. As far as function goes I think G-10 is every bit as functional as Peel Ply CF and not as expensive. G-10 in my opinion is truly one of the most functional knife handles out there and just about my overall favorite. There are a few knives that I like with Carbon Fiber handles but I mainly like it for it's sturdiness and relatively light weight. JD

Not the best picture - sorry :o - but you get an impression of the different carbon types (except the glossy on the C22 I don't have):
