Carbon fiber handles

I am thinking about getting a spyderco knife with carbon fiber handles. I was just wondering what you all think about them. I am especially interested in if there is anything that might be a problem with them like is it scratches easy or something like that.

They are beautiful! Get a Sage or Gayle Bradley =)
Seems like CF is really hard and does not get scratched easily. But it's relatively brittle.

I have a sage and military in carbon fiber. Two of my favorite knives. Both have great feel and grip. The sage1 has been dropped on concrete multiple times without a scratch. Haven't dropped the military yet.:)

I like what I am hearing, any recommendations on what one to get. I was leaning towards a sage.

I think i have a carbon fiber fetish >.< My fingers are itching to play with my Sage all the time

well there are three different types

Smooth:
EX: UKPK, Caly 3, cat, Chicago

Textured:
EX: Gayle Bradley, Sage 1

Peel-Ply:
Ex: Paramilitary 2 S90V sprint run, Stretch 2 CF, Military S90V sprint run

I have all 3 types, and I like them all, but probably the better is the textured. It gives some grip, but still looks beautiful. The peelply is more like g10 in its feel, but also looks fantastic

I've never seen a CF Spyderco drop in value. You can buy one, carry and use it for five years, then sell it for what you paid for it at the very least. ;)

I agree in that Textured CF is my favorite, the peely ply is too much like G10 IMO but it is very nice. The S90V Manix 2 I had was peel ply and I loved it.

The only CF Spydie I still own is my Terzuola Slippie, I LOVE everything about that knife and the "twill" or "textured" CF is great :)

There are some really nice ones out there. Smooth CF is as durable as smooth G-10 and micarta. Can it scratch or chip? Sure, pretty much anything can if you abuse it enough, but it will take a good bit more effort than scratching stainless steel or titanium handles would. In my experience, the surface texture on peel ply CF is considerably more durable than the texture on peel ply G-10.

I have the Sage and the Cat. I prefer the texture of the Sage. The Cat is smooth, but I bought it for carry in Boston where I can't have a blade that exceeds 2.5".

I do enjoy putting the CF Peel ply to use, however I honestly don't feel it warrants the inflated cost.
I really dislike smooth CF, and havn't really warmed to the twill CF either.

As an alternative to G10 I'd rather have Micarta any day.

I'm another CF junkie. I think the Sage is probably the quintessential Spyderco knife that "has it all."

I also have the following in CF:

Sage 1
Gayle Bradley
Manix 2
Caly 3
Stretch 2
Paramilitary 2 (carrying at the moment)
Kopa
Lum Chinese

I have the Caly3 CF and it's a great EDC. Some may not like the smooth CF, but it's great if you wear pants that you don't want any wear or tear (read: dress pants). And then there's the cool factor.

However, if you wear jeans/cargo pants mostly, then something with some grab would probably work best.

On the Military carbon fiber is a functional upgrade, as the design of that knife relies on the rigidity of the handle scales rather than full steel liners. On most other knives, carbon fiber is more just for looks.

I like the finish on the Sage 1 and Gayle Bradley.

i've dropped my Caly 3 CF on cement, and the CF was not effected at all (didn't see a single scratch, chip or scuff) while the stainless steel back did get some scratches. It is durable stuff, and beautiful and classy looking to boot.

I like the twill CF as well...I only have one knife with it, my Sage 1. Can't wait for my Chaparral!!!
