Carbon Fiber Spydies

My 2nd CF Spydie was the Sage 1. When I have friends ask me which knife they should get, I say the Sage 1 is THE knife to get, if you only get one.

You had to post this the day one reared its pretty little head on the Oz-bay didn't you? I'm going to have to go bid on it now. *sigh* ;)

If you're right handed, you won't regret it. Heck, if you're left handed and more willing to "adapt" than me, you won't regret it.

A few more since such as a CF D-fly and Chaparral.

A CF Dragonfly? What model is that, please?

You may also want to consider what type of carbon fiber you want. The carbon fiber scales from Golden and Japan that I have seen have all been made up of 100% carbon fiber layers. Some are peel ply, some are smooth. However, the factory in Taiwan that makes the Gayle Bradley, Sage, and Navaja appears to only use carbon fiber veneer over G-10 scales. If appearance is the only consideration, then it's a moot point as it definitely saves cost, offers more traction over smooth CF, and looks great. If you're looking for lighter weight or the feeling of having a 100% carbon fiber scaled knife, you may want the real deal.

It's not in that photo. Here's what it looks like...

I believe the ones in Cosmo's picture are

Left column, top to bottom: Walker Sprint, Cat, Cat, Chicago, Chicago
Right column, top to bottom: Sage I, Delica, Terzuola SlipIt, Caly 3, Harpy
Bottom center: Balance

Not much difference in weight really. CF Military weighs 5 grams less than the G-10 version. CF Caly 3 weighs 2 grams less than the G-10 did.

Yes Deacon is right.

When I mentioned the CF D-Fly I ment to say it was obtained after the picture was taken.

As you can see I like CF spydercos. Something about them that screams class.

I love to pair my gb with my pearl case sleeveboard pen knife. they just look good together.

and i had no idea they made a cf harpy. is it plain edge? I know those are hard to find on harpies

Yes, there are both plain and serrated edged CF Harpy's in the wild.

This comparison between the Caly3 CF and the Sage 1 may be relevant to your interests.

Other things to keep in mind:

Gayle Bradley:
Blade: 3.438" modified drop point, CPM M4
Weight: 5.5 oz
Lock Style: Liner Lock
CF Finish: semi-matte twill/weave. More traction than flat matte, less than peel-ply
Construction: Screw (Open, easier to clean)
Clip: Standard, 4-way

Caly 3 CF:
Blade: 3" leaf, ZDP-189 (harder for me to sharpen)
Weight: 3 oz
Lock Style: Back Lock
CF Finish: flat smooth matte (least traction of Spyderco's CF finishes)
Construction: Pinned (Closed, harder to clean)
Clip: Wire, 2-way (tip up)

Sage 1:
Blade: 3" leaf, CPM SV30
Weight: 3.2 oz
Lock Style: Liner Lock
CF Finish: semi-matte twill/weave (more traction than flat matte, less than peel-ply)
Construction: Screws (Open, easier to clean)
Clip: Wire, 2-way (tip up)

Chaparral:
Blade: 2.812" leaf, CPM SV30
Weight: 2.5 oz
Lock Style: Back Lock
CF Finish: semi-matte twill/weave (more traction than flat matte, less than peel-ply)
Construction: Screws (Open, easier to clean)
Clip: Wire, 2-way (tip up)

I recently decided to purchase one of Spyderco's CF models for business casual and dressier occasions. I eliminated the GB because I was looking for something smaller (read: less threatening) than my Para 2; on the other end of the spectrum, I eliminated the Chaparral in favor of a thicker, sturdier blade. That left the Caly 3 and Sage - I went with the Sage because it'd be easier for me to clean, sharpen, and maintain my grip on the handle.

That being said, I'm sure I'll break down and buy a Chaparral as a "back-up knife for business casual and dressier occasions" before 2012 is up.

super thorough post unicharge, nice. I can't add much after that. I personally have to caly 3 cf. I bought it as a "dress knife", something that feels more at place in formal attire. The wire clip is less noticeable, and the caly rides lower in the pocket because of it. One thing to keep in mind is that the outside laminate of the caly3cf, 440j2, scratches really easily, so if keeping a nice finish on it is important, it might be best to not heavy edc it. I tried myself to keep it nice, however the ergos are great, and I couldnt help but end up using it all the time anyways.

I have been carrying a GB everyday for over a year.
M4 is awesome!!
The carbon fiber still looks like new..
I just bought a back up GB for a safe queen. The Gb is simply awesome.

Also keep in mind that there is a ZDP Caly 3.5 Cf in the works. I saw Sal mention that he was carrying a prototype around in his pocket. I have no idea when it will be released and it will be laminated, bc the maker doesnt have a laser.

I love my gb but how can anyone resist a carbon fiber caly 3.5?

agreed, no resistance whatsoever :) I hope it is laminated, another cool detail, I could care less about the scratches on the 420j.

My Sage 1 is the smoothest knife I own. It's fit and finish are excellent and it dissapears in the pocket with it's low riding pocket clip. You really can't go wrong with the sage, it's carbon fiber has a great texture to it.

I love my Michael Walker ZDP189 CF. small but very nice for a small blade.

but I prefer the blade shape and i think my Caly3 CF zdp slices better.

Caly3, Michael Walker, and Kopa

apparently I dont have any pictures of my CF UKPK.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the Millie in cf and s90v. I should use mine more than I do.

I think they only made 1200 of them.
