Carbon steel and stainless Randalls

When I got my Randall back in 79, the stainless blades were made in Germany, while the carbon blades were heat'in and beaten out of O-1 right there in Orlando.

So I have to agree with Mr. Edginton on the snobbery issue. Real Randalls are made here.
Now ducking for cover. -Brian

Aren't the stainless knives made by stock removal? Would that mean less work is involved?

Also, are the O1 blades thorough hardened or differentially tempered? Any one know the Rockwell numbers for Randalls?

That is an interesting question,as the stainless blades cost around $30 more then .01 carbon. I also assumed (one should never assume) that all of their knives were hand forged. Their .01 steel is also imported from Sweden.

All their knives (with the exception,I think, of their saltwater models) are forged.
They use 440b because they feel that it is the highest grade stainless which can be forged economically.
Yep, other grades CAN be forged...

I called the Randall shop once and asked about the Rc hardness of their blades, specifically, my #14, #1, etc. in stainless. I was told the Rc for both 01 and 440B was around 57 at the edge. I didn't think to ask at the time why the Rc may have been different elsewhere on the blade. They harden to this number to enhance toughness while still allowing the normal user to sharpen the edge.

My last Randall Knife Society newsletter indicated they were using ATS34 for their Model #10's, triathlete, and some model #14's as well!

Exerpt the new ATS-34 miniature model 1. All other stainless blades are 440B and handforged.

JoeL, not so! As I stated, model #10's (all sizes), the triathelete (non-catalog), and the Jack Crider protected design (the poorman's fighter--made on the model #10 stock) are all ATS34 now. Also they have been experimenting with ATS34 on some of their other models like the #14. This doesn't mean you can specify which steel you get and they probably won't tell you, but 440B is slowly making an exit.

I just received a VERY nice Randall catalog in the mail, along with an answer to some questions I had asked them about their stainless steel knives.

As for the stainless steels they're using, they listed the following without further explanation:

440C 440B, ATS34

In the catalog, they state that high carbon stainless is too hard for die stamping, not hand forging. I believe ALL of their knives are hand forged, including the stainless.

P.S. It's confirmed; I NEED a model 12 bowie and a model 5 trail knife to go with it.

...ordering this catalog was a BIG mistake!!!

Hey Happy Camper- I am mailing my $ to Randall's shop tomorrow for my first Randall Catalog, but I already have the Randall shakes! For some reason I seem to NEED a #1!!!

Don't do it Crayola!! There will be no turning back! That Randall #1 is all around the neatest knife. But you're going to feel like a kid in a candy store when you see the selection.

Here's one: I was showing my wife the pictures in the Randall catalog, and she recognized the #12 Smithsonian as the knife from "Battle Mistress!"

I knew she was a keeper!!

their stainless has been forged at the Randall shop for quite a while now. Not sure about the ATS-34, it's a pretty new addition, but I would guess it's stock removal.
I have quite a few Randalls-my users are carbon and the wallhangers are stainless. They're all beautiful.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I have to agree with Camper, Crayola. I just picked up a #1 8" and I am bitten. I loved this thing straight from the box. pretty high praise as I have owned a mess of knives. I already am thinking of what to get when Nordic comes to Ny next month and am going to place an order for a #1 5inch maybe with commando handle. and ... and .. maybe just maybe a #12 and and ...... Well you get the point.

Happy C,
The "Mistress", if it was from the movie starring Al Ladd, was made by Nelson Cooper.
Crayola,
The Classic length is 7". It's also my favorite. I don't have any Randalls in stainless, though.
