I have a new found love for these, easy to get sharp, they stay sharp and get sharper then "stainless", IMO. I have started to collect more of these lately, and am using them more then any other knife. I am on the hunt for a new blade, here is what I have so far -

Battle rat (not going to use this beast, it's just too pretty)
BK7
BK9
Becker Necker (that I handled in oak)
Cold Steel Trailmaster
Cold Steel SRK
Spec Plus sp6
Spec Plus Frontier bowie
Sog Tigershark (in SK5, not going to use this one either)
Sog Tech
Blackjack Skinner (Convex edge, stag handle)
Blackjack Warner/Moran Rio Brande Bowie
KaBar Heavy Bowie (the big one)
Bark River Highland (x2)
Bark River Fox River
Bark River Woodland

I want to pick up a Cold Steel Recon Scout, after that I am at a loss as to what's next. Around $100, maybe a tad more, you can see from what I have so far what my price range is... What have you used and liked? Disliked? Any suggestions?

Becker BK2 Companion (gotta have one), and Becker BK1 Brute (whacker extraordinare). I also like my Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie 1277 for $40.00 it's a great beater knife that takes everything you can give it and asks for more. I use this one almost as hard as Cliff Stamp tests them lol.

You might take a look at the Bob Moran model Spyderco. He is an original knife guy who recently passed away, RIP.

It's not a carbon steel but decent none the less. It is made from Spyderco Steel, also called VG-10. Spyderco is the only ones who use it. It has lots of cobalt in it for some reason.

Spyderco gave it a real original model number FB01 (fixed blade #1).

FB02 is the drop point model.

VG-10 is a Japanese stainless steel used by other companies who have knives made there, including Fallkniven. I have never heard it called "Spyderco Steel," including by Spyderco. And OT.

Nor is VG-10 only used by Spyderco. However, it IS correct to say that Spyderco has been the first to have been playing around with this steel. IIRC Sal once mentioned, that they were the ones to direct Fjallkniven towards VG-10. Sorry OT again.

Coming soon, CRKT's version of the AG Russell Sting, in 1095 carbon steel.

Into old knives? Vintage OldTimer fixed blades are carbon steel.

My understanding is that the steel is drop forged 1050 carbon steel

Rust and corrosion resistance come at a price, so if not needed, an appropriate carbon steel will almost always be the better choice.

Ranger knives would be a good solid purchase. I really like your choices.

PS - The Battle Rat looks a LOT better when used! :D :D

Well you should know. :)

Actually, I knew that too since it's the front cover of the catalog that came last week. I simply typed it wrong. :(

Kershaw Echo

Jim N was asking about carbon steel blades, but since you mentioned Kershaw, how about the Outcast (10" blade of D2)? I know it's a "tool steel", but it's not actually a "stainless steel" (pretty close, it is semi-stainless).

Best wishes,
3G

I have been looking at the Kershaw Outcast, it is actually on my list. As far as folders go, I have many Old Timers. My actual knife count is over 500, 66 of which are Schrade, well over 3/4 of which are old timers. I also have about 40 Bucks, 20 Gerbers (pre-fiskar garbage), a few Sogs, SAKs, Remington Bullet knives, Camillus Cartridge knives, KNCA, and a ton of antique knives (A.J. Sears, Eagleton, Kabar, OVB, Wostenholme, Western, Camillus, Cattaraugus, Pal, etc., this phase is over and will soon see Ebay and new owners). I bookmarked a page of Ranger knives, I wil have to go back and look at these again... Oh, and AG, the Sting may make it's way to list as well, are you going to offer it for sale?

Now how about a couple knives for answering your question so promptly? I would not turn down anything you just mentioned, in case you are wondering.

I own the SOG SK5 Tigershark and love it. Probably one of the best looking bowies out their and its a great knife. The SK5 will take and hold a good edge for a while and it comes with the very nice leather sheath. The only problem is good luck finding one ;)
