I have a friend at work who has asked me about where to get a good carbon steel stockman. Queen and Case come to mind but I am open to suggestions. Any suggestions about a good affordable knife and where to get it?

Thanks,

check out the bokers! they make some darn good carbon blades. as good as cases and queens.,,VWB.

Schrade 8OT.
The US Production 8OT's can still be found on eBay for around $40.

What he said!

Case is a good choice as well, though they don't seem to offer many stockmans in CV in the 4'' range.

I have always liked the looks of the eye brand stockmans, and have heard they have good carbon steel, might be worth a look.

Case CV medium stockmans are really nice. I own several. They make it in the Amber Bone and yellow handles I know. Probably a few other materials also.

Go to http://www.knifeworks.com/ and searrch for "stockman". The first 5 are Boker and 4 of them are carbon steel. (Thanks a lot for getting me tempted again. :) )

He's got 108 stockmans listed and when you get to Case, look for CV but click on all of them (except the decorative handled which are SS) because some are CV that aren't marked as such on the thumbnail.

+1 on Bokers... You even get your choice of price point with the Boker brand (high), Arbolito/Little Tree brand (Boker-owned manufacturer in Argentina) and Magnum (China and Taiwan).

However, quality control can be spotty with the Bokers so I would handle one before buying, or buy from someone with an easy return policy. But, if you get the 99 out of 109 that are free of issues, you'll get a VERY solid knife.

Do us all a favor and ask one question in one forum. That way you get to see all the answers at once, and we don't have to post to multiple forums. It also saves space on the servers.

I considered the possibility that there are certain aficionados that might not go to one or the other of the two forums regularly. For instance I seldom go to the traditional folder and fixed blade forums. For anyone who finds it disturbing or impolite to post in both forums, no discourtesy is intended.

Thanks, for all the comments & suggestions from both forums.

Tell us a little more about what he wants. Size? Handle material? Bolster shape? Personally, I would recommend a new Case with CV steel. You can get a CV stockman from Case in amber or red bone, or with yellow composite handles.

Case's medium stockman in CV and amber bone is really nice. But you didn't mention if it had to be a full size stockman, or what handle material he prefers.

I had an Eye-Brand stag stockman, and it was a great knife. Good fit and finish, good edge holding, and the European Red stag made a very nice grip. My nephew has the knife now, and uses the heck out of it. So far so good.

But my favorite will always be Case. Made here in the U.S., and has a great customer service department for any repairs you may need in the future. There's alot of very long time employee's up there in Bradford making sure you get a good product. And I think the CV is a bit better in edge holding and toughness.

If you can find an old Cold Steel on Ebay, their size and ergonomics are great - not to mention the Carbon V steel.

To add to what Esav has already mentioned: I have order at least six different knives form KW. Very reputable dealer. You can buy with confidence form them. Good luck:thumbup:

Try a Böker Grand Canyon Stockman.
The bone and jigging on this pattern is really worth having:thumbup:
List price about 50 dollar but can be got well under I suspect.
