Is it for forging or just for stock removal? If it's for forging, it's well known that old cars and trucks suspension springs makes nice blades. It's generally around 0.5% C, so it's more suitable for long blades that have to be tough and resilient than for short or folders blades that have to take and keep a tremendous edge. These steels doesn't contain vanadium, molybdenium and such alloys that improves greatly blade characteristics. In fact, you could use suspension springs also for stock removal, but it may take much work depending the initial section of the spring. But remember, HT of carbon steels is not as easy and tolerant as stainless, especially quenching have to be done very fast, steel must reach ambiant temperature in less than 15s after having left the oven and austenizing temperature.
Sorry if taht wasn't the answer you expected.
