Carbon V Steel vs 1095 Steel?

Thank you STR for that info. One thing about the Case CV that I have noticed is the sheepfoot blade in my 1982 6318 turned black after peeling some potatos and the other blades gradually turned black with time and use.An older gent that I bought a Schrade Walden 8OT from at a flea market told me that all the folks used to call the steel in Case knives "black steel".The Case knives I have bought since 1999 do not turn black, but show bluish or rainbow like colors at first gradually becoming gray after use and time.I asked the Case rep about this at the 2011 blade show in Knoxville and he said the steel should be the same.Any way thanks again for your post.

I think it depends on what carbon v you get. I know the Cold Steel carbon v is something like 1085. However as STR has shown in his posts, more than one company has sold knives with carbon v as the steel name.

Not true. Cold Steel SK5 is on the order of 1085. Cold Steel has never sold a 1085 cognate and called it "Carbon V".

Here is the text of a note from Paul Tsujimoto, currently Sr. Engineer at KA-BAR:
Here is the correct time line:

1) Cold Steel Carbon V was first produced in the Alcas Factory (Cutco and KA-BAR) Mid 1980s, Carbon V was originally 1095CV/0170-06/50100B.
2) Cold Steel moved to Ontario early 1990s. Carbon V started out as 1095CV/0170-06/50100B but while at Ontario, Dan Maragni removed the small amount of nickel from the formula.
3) Cold Steel moved to Camillus approx. 1995. Carbon V stayed 0170-06 minus the nickel.
How do I know all of this?...I worked at all 3 factories.

And from the same source:
Here is the chemistry for Sharon Steel 0170-06 (From Sharon Steel ref.book)

C: 0.95-1.10; Mn:0.30-0.50; P:0.025max; S: 0.025max; Si:0.15-0.25; Cr:0.40-0.60; Ni:0.25; Mo:0.06; V:0.15-0.25.

This is also the formula for KA-BAR's 1095CV. .

That is about as close to getting it from the horse's mouth as you are going to get.

cool. I just was about to go search for this quote from tooj. Saved me time searching.

Thanks for all this info guys. I own quite a few current Becker knives (all mfg by Ka-Bar) and they are great blades. I have put them through the test over and over and never had a failure. Kind of cool that the original formula dates back to the 50s. You kinda wonder where all that steel has gone over the years. I think the BK9 looks like a car from the 50s:

between paul, dan, phil, and mikey, and they experiences together and apart, i'd say they know their steel and heat treats :)

some say that Camillus's heat treat was perfection, and a thing lost to the ages, others might say that KaBar has the right stuff. but we just call him: The Toooj

I'm not STR but I recall very well those times and the loss of one of the old greats in the industry.

I can't say or make comment about the last day, or weeks or whatever but the Camillus heat treating on their version of the steel, which they called 0170-6 was excellent right up to the end. They also made Beckers line back then using the same steel and they had a great reputation, as they ( Becker) still does with current production .Consistently excellent performers now made by KaBar using 1095 CroVan.!

Ever wonder what happened to the rest of Camillus's stock of that steel? I always did. http://www.agrussell.com/a-g-russell-sandbox-bowie/p/RUhhhU712BKOD/

Still great stuff!

:)

Thank you Mastiff I appreciate the info. Feeling new love for the Brute.

You're welcome.

I have an old model Camillus made 7 inch Becker I'm pretty fond of too. The Brute disappeared before I got one. I'll get one some day when I have the money and see one available.

I agree !!!

My guess is that Mike Stewart knows what he is talking about. He is one of the best production knife makers in the country right now.

I just wish Mr. Stewart would offer more models for those of us who like knives with guards. Most Bark River knives have little or no guard.

Ive used a lot of both standard 1095 and 1095CV, they are VERY close... as in the end user will probably never be able to tell any performance difference. I do a few things slightly different in heat treat, as the 1095CV seems to harden deeper and in my experience need a tad higher tempering cycle.

I have spent the last 10 years in a very un-concerted effort to figure out what Carbon V is all about, since it sells so well on Ebay. And this was a beautiful answer, thank you very much. Tonight my answers have come, except I still don't know if I should buy that Carbon V vintage Trailmaster/SRK. (When this thread began, the knives hadn't earned "vintage.")
