Carbon Vee or Carbon 5?

I concur - I've always used that pronunciation, too. I just got to thinkin' lately that it may stand for Vanadium.

The guy at the CS booth at last year's Blade Show called it Carbon Vee. I was telling him of chipping the blade of an LTC on a buried brick by accident and when he spoke of the steel, he referred to it as Carbon Vee.

So, what does the "V" in steels like CPM440V stand for?

Just curious...

I was just talking to someone at CS customer service today about an order, and she pronounced it Carbon Five. Nice voice, too.

Since V is the Roman numeral for five, maybe it should be pronounced "carbo quinque"?

The writeup in the Special Projects catalog defining Carbon V calls it a high carbon, low alloy cutlery grade steel. No vanadium.
