Carburizing iron knives

Heh, year and a half later, but okay ;)

I've done a few blades using this method since this thread, and have had quite good results. both with steel, and wrought iron. It's a fun project.

Got any pics? :)

What methods and materials did you use to carburize (i.e. gas forge, HT oven, encasement, material for carbon power, etc) ? Also, did you carburize pieces of bar stock first then re-stack and forge weld them, or did you carburize and heat treat the already profiled and ground blade? Thanks

I don't have any pictures, but I followed the clickspring method fairly closely. Gas forge, sealed clay cases with charcoal, flour, and salt packed around the blank.

I forged and rough ground the blades (all smaller whittle tang blades) down to about 80% before case hardening, so I would have plenty of carbon penetration at the edge. Didn't want to grind through to mild/iron after heat treat. Hold the whole package at critical for about 45 minutes, then allow to cool to room temp. Then it's a fairly normal heat treating cycle from there. I suspect there are slight improvements I could make to the process, but it did seem to work well.
