Care and Feeding of your Becker

I stuck the knife under hot water from the tap for several minutes rubbing the metal with my fingers, and it worked for me. YMMV

Yeah, a good hot wash will work as well. Its different roads to the same bar.

For me, it really just depends on if I have baking soda (and I like watching the bubbles :D), or if I don't.

Depends on the mood.

It certainly helped me last time remember? Even after washing it off, the vinegar kept on eating into the blade.

Okay first I want to thank Lecter and everyone else that gave me advise on my first Becker stripping. I just knew something would happen to make it go south. I could go into some of my last DIY projects that went horribly awry, but it would only drag down the thread and provide comic relief at my expense. :) Anyway, I will post a shot of when I got it, when it got handles and lastly when it got stripped. I went with the 50/50 water and vinegar and finished it off with baking soda. I was really surprised at how easily the black coating came off. A little work with fine steel wool and it was all off. Handles back on and a thin coating of mineral oil and it's ready to go.

I haven't stripped any blades, so I can't comment on that, but generally the edge rust doesn't bother me until it kills the edge, then I strop the blade and I'm good to go for a few more weeks. I patina'd my uncoated carbon blades with a combo of use and vinegar.

After I stripped the knife and did the patina, I took a piece of paper and it would not even slice through it. Put it on the steel for about 6 swipes on each side and it sliced right through it. Not sure if I blame the process or the sheath. I have noticed that the sheath has been dulling the blade. I thought I had the sheath broken it enough to where the dulling would stop. Will check it again in a few days to confirm what dulled the blade.

All in all I am really happy with the outcome. It has a very even patina on it. I stripped my Condor Hudson Bay and it had all kinds of splotches on it and there was some finish close to the wood handles that I was never able to completely remove.

Thanks Lecter. If I could have found some of that backing soda it might have turned out better. :)
