Care of antler handles

I have some very old (late 1800's) cutlery with antler handles. One has a hairline crack in it.
Is there anything I can put on the handles to help preserve them as well as possible?
I have heard mineral oil and baby oil, just wanted to get your thoughts.

Thanks in advance. Dan

Don't put ANY OIL on your handles! It just softens the stag. Use a good wax.

I use potassium permanganate first to restore original color on old antlers. Then I use super glue all over the antler let dry and sand it using 320-400-600-1200 grit and lightly buff with white rouge. It will seal the cracks and they come out polished. You can also use light brown stain to color the antlers. Rey
