Oh yes, definitly worthy of stitches!! thaught i hit an artery as the blood was pulsing out. luckily i got it stopped...,after i cuaght be better half as she fainted from seeing it. rough day.....

I've been lucky and have only had a couple nicks/scrapes while hand-sanding... but it could happen real quick.

My cats like to hang out in the shop... they love to jump up on the bench to see what's up. I'd hate to see them land on a pointy object, so I make it a point (ho ho) to not leave anything sharp vised up and/or exposed unless I'm actually working on it and paying attention.

I'm a crabby bastard sometimes, and have yelled at my woman and kid... "Don't ever come in the shop and yell to get my attention when I'm using power tools again!" For goodness sakes, supper being ready can wait a couple minutes until my hands are away from the moving parts...

James, i suffer that exact problem! it seems my cat loves to spend most of his time on my benches.so normally i am very cautious. this happened at 5:30am as i was reaching for my coffee. was a straight in stab wound just above the wrist. blade was ground on 2 and 3" wheel's so its thin and pointy.

Dang cats... when I'm hand-sanding they can't resist the movement and think it's play-time... :D

Right in the wrist? Man, that sounds mighty painful. I hope you only cut muscle and not tendons.

It takes hours to get a chunk of steel sharp, and less than a second to find out how sharp it really is. :o

It could happen to anyone; see recent threads about buffer mishaps. Thanks for the warning!

On a lighter note, the first pic of your knife with the blood dripping down it does look kinda cool... :D

Ooh thats nasty:eek:
Nice blade though is it for sale:D Seriously I am glad you are ok after what could have been a really scary accident.

Get well soon;)
Steven

PS Post a few pics of the cats on the bench:)

Thanks for the well wishes guys!!

the stab was above the wrist a good bit, did'nt need that coffee after all. i was wide awake :) i'm damn lucky that this blade had'nt yet been sharpened. thats exactly why i do that very last.

heres my little buddy: his names Marlowe..,yes, after Charles.

Early in knifemaking I nearly had the same accident. Afterwards I placed my knives in the vise with the cutting edge down, and pointing away from me. Good safety point when it comes to cats. Even without sharpening, the point is always eager to find an artery or two.

Good 'ol butterfly bandaids :)

The only time i have a blade positioned like this is when i'm sanding the spine..,i will be alot more carefull in the future.

Well. glad to hear you're OK.

Every time I work with a knife I figure I'm gonna get cut; makes be a little more careful so at least I minimize the damage I do to myself.

And whats the deal with knifemakers and cats? My cat has learned where he shouldn't be. He's pretty smart . . . for a cat.

That's awesome i need a belt guarding cat to.

Wow sorry to hear that! RJ Martin did a much similar thing but with worse consequences!
When I visited him in CT, he show me how the blade was facing outwards, when you are
looking down the point, it doesn't provide much of an outline and way too easy to be stab
by it! As I recall it cut his forarm quite badly, he's over that now but is also much more cautious!

hope yours heals quickly!
